they are tokens from 2002 struck in silver representing Felix Schlag's original winning design for the Jefferson nickel of 1938. They are struck in silver I believe, limited to 1938 pieces.
Nice finds on the deuces! I remember there was a PNC Branch in the lobby of my office in Jersey City back in the mid 1990s and I would always ask for twos and about once every couple months there would be some red seals, including several from the 1928 series! I still have all of them I think.
I got this one in the mail today for my Peace set:
And these a few days ago from a trade with Marvin (I never noticed till I took the pics that these have a medal allignment). I really like the Thuringen design on the lower left.
Heck, common date...1830s are a dime a dozen, especially with tarnish like that! Of course you know I'll give you dibs if I ever decide to part with my O-118.
Very cool notes! I am stunned at how similar that 20 peso is to the large size US $20 gold certificate, I might have to bid on that one if you put it up on eBay!
Most of the silver coins were removed from circulation by regular people as the country was facing a coin shortage when the clad coins were introduced. Lots of people removed a lot of coins from circulation once the silver value exceeded face value in the 1960s, and it happened a whole lot faster than with copper pennies. By 1970 the only silver left were 40% silver halves which didn't exceed face value until the price moved higher.
