3. "every world coin collector should own at least one _______"

While I am tempted to say a Krause, as a catalogue is VERY useful, if it had to be a particular coin, I would have to say, set of coins minted in various metals. (why not, it's very affordable, excluding precious metals and odd metals)

4. "every world gold coin collector should own at least one _______"

One chervonetz. ;) Afterall, it was a denomination supposedly minted for trade purposes. Except it failed hard :ninja: Somewhat. ;)

A market to them to stick to. STOP RAISING THE PRICES ELSEWHERE!!! Or perhaps they should stick to kilo gold coins.

Not if you have a separate category for US coins. :ninja:

For the world silver coin group I would suggest the Maria Theresia Taler. But in my opinion there are no "must have" coins in such relatively broad categories. So, see Tiff's reply.

Doug,

The gold ducat is really cool! is that truly a 1637 coin, or a re-edition (is that the proper term?) of some sort? Man, if that coin is nearly four hundred years old, it is truly stunning! thanks for sharing

Mike,

I have greatly enjoyed your posts and insights. What may i ask is an 'electrum coin'? Since i'm a newbie and interested in world gold, is this something i should keep an eye out for? thanks!

Doug,

In regards to the 'Spanish colonial 8 reales', aren't these the coins that were commonly found on sunken ships? As a kid, i seem to remember reading something about them. Are they worth a fortune, or can they be found for a relatively reasonable sum? thanks!

Yup, many of them have been found on sunken Spanish galleons. That's what got me started collecting them over 30 yrs ago in fact - I discovered one of those galleons. But they don't all come from sunken ships, they were after all the most widely circulated coin in the Americas.

As for cost, they're not exactly cheap but they don't cost a fortune either. If memory serves, I paid about $325 for the one I pictured. They have gone up a bit since then though.

thanks Doug!

those are cool examples of historic coins, and the price is relatively reasonable for such a legendary coin. thanks for sharing!

BTW, what is the story with your beautiful gold ducats you collect? I understand they go quite far back in time, and i remember reading that there were re-issues of them? I may look into one from around 1900, but i didn't want to get one that was a re-issue made in the last few years that looks like the older ones. thanks again!

I assume by re-issue you mean restrike. If that is the case, to the best of my knowledge there has never been a restrike for a Netherlands ducat and that is what I primarily collect. There have however been restrikes for ducats issued by other countries - especially Austria with those dated 1915.

So if you want an original, get a Netherlands ducat, they are surprisingly affordable, or ask about sepcific coins and dates when you find one you like.

You discovered a sunken ship? How exciting that would be. Were you in that business?
