  1. Looks good! What is this preservation process?
  2. Hi Sigi, Once again - Great Coins! I haven't managed to procure a single 1788 mule so far, so I wasn't paying much attention to which type is rarer From my meager understanding all are pretty rare. Based on what I read on Russian forums the old cypher coins are rarer than the old eagle coins. Ilyin evaluated the old cypher / new eagle combination at 10 roubles, hence Bitkin's R2. The other mule is considered the most common of the rare 1788 varieties. There is some debate on why the old style 1788 coin is rarer than your R2 mule.
  3. Thanks for posting! Although, the Sincona 19 sale, if the memory serves me right, took place before the rouble took a nose dive. I'm curious to see what happens in the Part 4 of the Sincona sale. My impression of the last New York sale was that it was less than dazzling. I am curious to hear other opinions. At the same time, I do not see any perceivable drop in prices on eBay.
  4. The coin is in poor condition and thus will not fetch more than a few dollars.
  5. Questions to those who know about Efimoks. Does this one have a chance of being real? http://www.ebay.com/itm/351321035281
  6. Managed to pick up a few items that are not coins. Not sure what these are. Any ideas?
  7. The coin that I am referring to (#4 1st post) is not in VKGM. Here's the full plate:
  8. As you can see both of the coins in your scan have the mark the 'Ц'.
  9. Look at the coin below, it has the 'Ц' mark on the hind leg of the horse. And the coins with this arrangement of ornaments usually have that mark. I believe I see the mark in the Yusupov scan as well. But there is a coin with the same ornaments and without the 'Ц' mark. It might be scarcer than the one with the mark (not sure), but it is not described in Bitkin, and I am guessing that it is missing from VKGM.
  10. Love the undercoin on this one! Lots of traces. Mine only has a bit on the reverse:
  11. There was that French essay struck on an Alexander 1st style 2 kopecks. I recall there was quite a scandal around it. I believe WCO was selling it and Vasiliy Kapustin (MiM) hated it. There should be an old thread here as well as on every other Russian coin forum.
  12. As far as I can see, those have the 'Ц' mark on the hind leg. The above coin, and the 4th coin from the 1st post do not.
  13. There are Poltinas and Roubles from 1818 with re-engraved initials ПС/СП: At the same time the 1818 СП Rouble is known, while the 1818 СП Poltina is not. There were far fewer Poltinas struck in 1818 than Roubles, and the СП Rouble is rare. Perhaps there is an СП Poltina out there somewhere?
  14. I found a similar coin that was sold in 2009 at Fritz Rudolf Kuenker GmbH #150
  15. Thank you for this interesting information. So it seems very likely that Count Vorontsov received the 1790 medal from Suvorov, which he then passed to Matthew Boulton to create the 1799 Prince of Italy medal.
  16. Just posted 500th image on OmniCoin! http://www.omnicoin.com/collection/alexbq2
  17. As per my usual M.O., I mostly pay attention to the coins at hand. And I found something new, to me. I've had this coin for quite some time. An interesting coin with the incuse 'Ц' on the right hind leg of the horse. Not sure what that's all about, but we all know about this one. 1) Note that this coin has ornaments around the KO and an ornament above on the reverse, as well as 3 x's at the end of the inscription on the obverse. There are of course other variants of this coin without the 'Ц', but they have other ornamental combinations: 2) This one has the 3 x's, but no ornaments on the reverse 3) This one 2 x's and but has the reverse ornaments Getting to the point, I have recently found a coin without 'Ц', but with all the ornaments of the first coin: 4) I do not believe it is listed in Bitkin or the Konros base catalog. Adrianov does include this combination, but does not find it significant. I'm not sure that M-DV.ru has images of this one either.
  18. The other British made medal that I am aware of, contemporary with the first one here, has Suvorov looking very much the hussar.
  19. Thanks fir the info! Do you mean this one?
  20. Here's my recent acquisition. A Birmingham Mint medal by Kuchler commemorating Count Suvorov's victories over the French in the Italian campaign. Interestingly I found the following passage on a Russian Wikipedia page: "Russian ambassador in London, Count S.R. Vorontsov turned to Suvorov asking - to send his profile to have engraved and when he got the desired, thanked him in high-flown terms, saying that he, Vorontsov, was haunted relentlessly by all, asking for a portrait, all eager to have an image of the hero." I wonder if this is the profile that Count Vorontsov was talking about?
  21. Well, these estimates are very arbitrary. The thing about this type of coin is that it is a desirable and scarce type, and would be quite expensive in undamaged condition. At the same time lots of people do not have this type present in their collections (like me), and wouldn't mind getting a problem coin at a reasonable price. The arbitrary part is determining what is reasonable to you.
