ScottO
bargains bargains... BARGAINS £6 nothing like a crisp design coin from c.351ad, the mintmark is not clear though £3 interesting farthing, if it is not a contempory counterfit then it is surly a rare type, the olive brance points to space not a foot of the N due to a narrower legend and, althought not that clear here, there is a dot after the date i like the reverse, of this coin, no sillyness just what where and when £2.32 the 2 couple of double tournais 1639 E and 1643k £2 japanese cash, like the above coin, took me a few weeks to decide to buy.. partly because i didn't want to find out where it was from, then i found out... and bought, it is known as a wave cash from 1768-9 11 waves (apparantly) and most common type. 75p love this obverse design (not so much the reverse) i had picked one up the week before saw this with its better grade and colour and at under a pound why not 40p 30p NOW we have to go from the sublime.. to the rediculous
ScottO
5p (FIVE PENCE) each 1860 beaded boarder penny, hard to get type worth about £5-10 in this state 1869, is THE date in this series worth a good £10 1871 is THE OTHER date in the series worth similar to the 1869 1927, not really worth that much, it is VF and better then average as it stands, but the odd colouring made me have a punt as this looks like the darkened 1932 issues, if this is indeed darkened then it is very rare if not unique (no other has been found) 1928, nearly EF similar to the 27, and the colour correct with the period

ccg
The Constantius II piece looks like SMHA or SMKA. One's Heraclea, forgot what the other one is (probably in the Balkans or Asia Minor area).

ScottO
lets start at the top £12.52 as you know, one of my goals is a coin from every monarch this year perhaps is a good time to finish off the tudors and pick off what i can from earlier, now eleizabeth I is plentiful, mary and edward were going to be the hard ones. mary groat 1553/4 and to top that off a tudor belt buckle was in with the buy £5.85 i do like some good looking coins. and edward VIII thought i might as well buy myself a couple of restrike/pattern bits and BWA halfpenny to buy the penny single is £15 it is a modern restrike K.N halfpenny

ikaros
So how did the Vatican get away with putting a pope on the face of a coin? Same reason Belgium has King Albert II, Luxembourg has Grand Duke Henri, Monaco has Prince Albert, the Netherlands has Queen Beatrix and Spain has King Juan Carlos -- the pope is functionally the Vatican's head of state, so he's there in his political/temporal role rather than his spiritual one. Historically, the pope regularly appeared on Vatican coinage. Sometimes the papal arms appear instead. The Euro coins look like they have stable designs from year to year (the few they produce anymore), and those appear to all have the relevant pope on them--except, of course, for the 2005 sede vacante, and I think some of the 2 euro circulating commemoratives.
