Queen Christina Copper Ore 1639

One of Sweden's most fascinating monarchs was Queen Christina, whom reigned in her homeland for 14 years from when she was 13 years old until her abdication from the Swedish throne to pursue her religious avocation of becoming a Roman Catholic nun and subsequent move to Rome. Her reign began auspiciously with the untimely death of her father in battle in 1632 when she was only 5 years old. By 1640 she had attended council meetings and began to govern Sweden with some autonomy of her own being. It was very apparent at the outset of her reign that she was a very learned young woman and her surviving correspondence suggests she was remarkable in her intellectual pursuits in the arts of lettres. It also became apparent later in her twenties that she was not content with the Lutheran religion in her land. She endeavoured to correspond with Jesuits and professed a skepticism of the Lutheran faith.

In 1654 she stunned Sweden and abdicated the throne and immediately left Sweden with her possessions and Court Women, whom were sent back when she left Swedish territory. Christina then travelled to Rome where for the better part of the rest of her life she resided. In Rome she pursued her arts and philosphical interests and lives out her life in relative peace, save a vain attempt at securing the Polish throne in 1667. She died in 1689 and is buried in Rome.

This particular coin is a bronze 1 Ore from 1639 or MDCXXXIX and is 47 millimetres in diameter. Sweden thus began a long history of large bronze coins, later culminating in the issuance of plate money beginning in the 1640's.

Queen Elizabeth I Milled Sixpence 1562

A lovely coin that I enter rather for my wife, since she accepted it as part of my marriage proposal and did not bend it or cast it off. This coin is a milled tanner, or sixpence from 1562, and was part of an experiment running in the Tower Mint during that time to produce better coinage that was less likely to be forged etc. Also it involved labour savings, said result which cause an upset upon the mint workers, so the screw presses were quietly shuffled out and hammered coinage again resumed production for another hundred years.

Mary, Queen of Scotland Silver Ryal 1566

Ryal or 30/- or 360d 1565-1567, with tortoise climbing palm tree(the arms of Lord Darnley), must of Queen Mary's coinage was very indicative of her history, her childhood, her marriages, the demise of her husbands etc. This particular Ryal, a large crown sized coin, bears the name of her second husband, Lord Henry Darnley. This coin was referred to contemporaneously as a Crookestone Dollar, for the purported tree where it was conjectured that Lord Darnley courted Queen Mary. At any rate the design with the tortoise climbing the palm tree is fascinating, given that neither exist in Scotland, but were in fact taken from Lord Darnley's arms.

Lord Darnley was famously jealous of Mary, and her relationship with her private secretary, David Riccio. Lord Darnley engaged a plot and murdered Riccio in front of Mary in March 1566. After the birth of their son, later James VI, their marriage deteriorated. In February 1567 Lord Darnley was murdered, probably by James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. Earl Bothwell subsequently forced her into a marriage to him, and the spiraling end of her reign, her captivity, and her flight into England and another 20 years of captivity in Queen Elizabeth's kingdom began.
