Art
WOW! I have to review the standards for that beauty.
thedeadpoint
That was tough. Shields are difficult to gauge. I couldn't find any distinctive high points. Most of the coin seems broad and has low relief. I don't know how to describe it. I guess I just miss berries, feathers, hair, and cheeks.
izzy452
I'll take a chance on grading it, I'll say its a EF40
gpnyc
Looks like some of the frost has been rubbed from the fields, particularly on the reverse. As such, the highest I can go is AU-58. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that coin in a 62 holder.
thedeadpoint
Judging by the looks of the height and sharpness of the die crack, I'd say its in a more preserved state but did have some minor rubbing in the fields.
BiggAndyy
That is how I graded it, based partly on the die cracks. I gave it a 61. The image is too "flat" to get a real sense of the luster or rubs that might be there. Great coin!

LostDutchman
I took a shot at it... My guess is that it is in a 62 holder... but I hate grading these.... hahahaha
JamesBaker
I say MS 63. All the devices are sharp and well defined. It does look a little dull so I bumped it down to 63.

Burks
Didn't notice this before but are those die cracks running through the O in GOD?
syzygy
Didn't notice this before but are those die cracks running through the O in GOD? Yes, there are quite a few die cracks on this coin, including the one you mention - very typical for shield nickels.
thedeadpoint
Yes, there are quite a few die cracks on this coin, including the one you mention - very typical for shield nickels. Anyone know why that is?
syzygy
Anyone know why that is? I guess that it is because they are very hard - the shield was the first nickel and along with the nickel three cent piece (also found frequently with die cracks) the first nickel-copper US coin (right?). Perhaps, the dies were just not up to snuff.
