I am planning on ordering a digital scale from the States. Here is one web shop that I have been looking at: http://www.rightonscales.com/web/home/ What would be a good general purpose scale for coins? I do not deal with ancients and very minimally with medieval coins. My area of collecting normally does not bring me into direct contact with the more common forgeries. I am looking for something that will help me on the occasion when I get an unknown coin, want to double check a gold/silver coin for authenticity, etc. I have been looking at the Tanita 102. It has a maximum capacity of 100g and accuracy to 0.1g. Would this be sufficient for general use like mine? Also, I plan on ordering a Belomo loupe. From what I have read it is the best low-priced loupe out there. Any suggestions as to where I can order this inexpensively? Thanks for your help!

These kinds of stories always amaze me! Just imagine how many and what kinds of coins are out there in the world, hidden in such compartments, buried underground, placed within walls, etc. etc.

I received some cool bonuses today that came with payments: a cool 200 smackers note, a Minnesota-D state quarter, a Jeff nickel and a World Coin News newspaper! I would love to get a subscription to it, but it is way too pricey for Europe delivery.

Nice coin! That reverse immidiately brought to mind some 18th century Swedish coins, because of the similar design features.

Glad to hear that the notes have made it safely to their destination and that they were liked. Now waiting for one more to arrive. A question for the note pros who received this. What do you think about the plastic the note came in, do you think it is safe for long term storage or must it be moved?

Yes, I have been keen to get this one. It has been up on Amazon's site since early in the year, but only has been available for delivery for the past couple of months. I saw the previous edition at a book store once, but never got it. I regretted it as I never found one again. It will make a great reference source, especially with all the past ECU pieces in it. My Netherlands ECU, for example, is listed there but not in the standard Krause.

I remember a thread on this piece in the old CP. I do not recall all the details about this one, but I believe it was a restrike of one of the possible designs for the new nickel way back when. I think it was the designer's original intent for the coin, but then had to redesign it. (I wonder where Pilgrim is.)

I am ordering a small amount of these myself -just the €2 euro coin!! (there are apparantly 2 varieties regarding the edge inscription with the text facing up or down- nothing dramatic, it happens often) Anyhow, I thought to see if anyone else is interested. It will most likely be anywhere from €3.5-4 per coin plus shipping. Check exchange rates here. Not looking to make anything, but just to cover my costs. I prefer to avoid staples as well. With that said however.... I use both qualities of Hartbergers 2x2's. When I get a coin that I know is UNC or as good as I will get, I place it in the self-adhesive version. However, I also have a huge pile of normal, unadhesive 2x2's as well. (much chaeper and I view them as a temporary storage.) In these I keep the coins that I have a good expectations that I may find a better version: circulating euros, poor condition world coins, etc. So whenever I get something better, it is easy to switch. And as they are kept in 2x2 pages, they stay closed surprisingly well.

A friend visited there not too long ago and brought back some coins and Partagas cigars for me when my daughter was born. btw: I have some coins from pre-revolutionary Cuba (my great-uncle was a sailor); my guess is this is a low-relief 40 centavos?

Not neccessarily as Joesmom pointed out, there are other techniques. However, from what I understand (someone correct me if I am wrong), the flat clinch staples are normally made of a more inert metal (or plated) that will be less likely to cause damage in the long-term from corrosion leakage, rusting, and such.

As Europe has never had a common currency as such, where would you have them start? Do you think that everyone would have been satisfied calling it a Franc, Mark, or Lira? Of course the name of the currency had to be new and universal for the nations involved. As for the reflection upon history, please look at some of the designs and you will see that some go back thousands of years. I am not a €uro fanatic, but I do not see it as the boogeyman either as some claim it to be. It is merely an attempt to rationalize trade and commerce between many close and already highly interdependent nations. (Whether it was the best model implemented is open to debate.) If I may direct you to the front section of your Redbook, you will find coinage of numerous US states there. Now try and imagine a system where each state developed its own currency and what it would be like today. Imagine the hassle for a company in Georgia doing cross-border business in Florida: paper work, fluctuating exchange rates, Florida demonitizes to make its goods cheaper, etc. etc. I would think that the €uro is more of a compliment to the American system of interstate commerce rather than something that the US has to fear. Think of it this way, our €uros are similar to your state quarters; each state/country has its heritage represented, while the Washington/common side represents what the average citizen is trying to do------just make a buck/euro.
