  1. The Osaka mint issues are fascinating considering that Russia and Japan have had now 100 yrs of animosity towards one another, but back in 1916 remember that the Russo Japan war of 1905 was still near in the memory and Russia suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of Japan. It must have been remarkable that it was easier to deal with a recent enemy than preferentially going to France or Belgium which were in the throws of WWI.
  2. In all of mine, I have one Brussels minted coin. Did Sankt Peterburg just not have the capacity for the coinage during those years, or was it technical or political reasons?
  3. Back when I was in High School Mad Magazine had a spread on commemorative coins we would like to see. They had one where the mint was issuing a special commemorative coin for every living American. The way the US Mint is getting, I think someone there took that parody to heart. State quarters, the new nickles, the Presidential Dollars, the first wifes club thing for the $10 gold piece. What next?
  4. I thought these things on eBay were grossly overpriced. It made a good time for me to sell Scottish banknotes on eBay, since mine were the only non Jack Nicklaus notes. Curiously they are mispelled on eBay too, Jack Nicholas etc. If you want a good JN note mailed in a cardboard, PM me. I have contacts there that work in RBS.
  5. I have been mashing them since I was a kid, I started carefully using pliers to do the job. I noticed a long time ago that the staples basically shreaded the coin pages you put them in and could even damage other coins. I think this was something a lot of us did independently and didn't really talk about.
  6. Somehow a 1957 nickel managed to sneak past the security apparatus and find it's way into our Ukraine Fund jar. It had to be bailed out ten times face.
  7. Probably be my last coin purchase for quite some time, with so many of my coins going out the door. I used to collect coins, then kids came along.
  8. I have a part time job in sales, and operate a cash register. The only thing I have bought out of the register were a 1964 dime and 5 Wheats, but I see early 1940's Jeffs( no silver though, I would buy those) all the time, but give them out in change.
  9. Curious little fact about San Marino, for many years until about 20 years ago, they had communists leading their government.
  10. Michael, I see a distinct difference between the community dollars in your Michigan city, and these "Norfed" dollars. The community money projects benefit participants and if well organised and well regulated by the membership as a whole they are fully beneficial to all participants. Particularly the community as a whole by benefiting local merchants. But I see these other private currency projects with a bit more concern, especially whence *revaluations* occur. I cannot say with definative evidence for this particular organisation at question here, but there was a movement in Texas several years ago that advocated the use of silver certificates it had printed the proceeds of which were used in it's effort to seek the independance of Texas from the United States. They were most definately an anti government, and an almost anarchial approach to a Texas government.
  11. Premium copper coins being plate dalers, which were weapons grade or rather weapon sized coins.
  12. Had his heart dashed: Bender It is a bender, meaning in likelihood a suitor gave it to his intended and she bent it and cast it away, dashing his hopes of marriage.
  13. I have a large size Canada $1 from 1923 that was given to me when I was a kid, unfortunately it was laminated too.
  14. I got mine sometime during the week, with all that is going on I didn't have a chance to look at it until last night. My note is one of only 3 printed of that design, with the Indian and Buffalo. When I print them again, the design will change so this will be a rare note. I think Tiffybunny and 16D are the other owners of this version of the $5'er.
  15. It wasn't a circulation find really, but it was found under my wife's desk - a 1957 dime.
  16. CP cratered back in early June, the server couldn't manage, so it got moved. When that happened a lot of the old data went to Valhalla. So thus we start anew. Tiffybunny has a seriously pruned post count now:)
  17. Depictions of Artemis/Diana, bees and dolphins.
  18. I haven't quite convinced my wife yet that she wants to be the mother of 5 kids from 10-15 years old but we are getting closer to her agreeing. So soon when I get a chance I am going to be listing lots more stuff under $50 of course, the rest has to go to eBay. At least the 3 most determined personalities are on my side:)
  19. Just a reminder that this auction for our Ukraine adoption ends at 7 pm tonight. Sorry I have not been around much, but four kids in the house, you have not a lot of time for the computer, especially when the 14 yr old whom speaks no English still operates the computer to play english language games non stop!
  20. I think I posted somewhere that we are hosting two children in our home for three weeks, they are doing very well. Unfortunately their sister went to another home, but we are bringing her up for a visit so she can be with her brother and sister here. Kind of scary, but I think 2 children may not be in the works, but actually 3! There goes my coin collection, but when a beautiful 11 year old girl cries when you leave for work and waits and greets you excitedly several hours later when you come home, coins don't mean much
  21. Between vcoins.com and ebay, you have my purchases covered. I do buy things from other peeps too, Blackhawk etc. Never at a show, never in a shop, they never have what I want.
  22. Both of my kids like Tiffybunny very very much. They are still talking about her a day after the coins arrived.
  23. In Ukraine you are more likely to get poisoned from pesticides on your food than radiation poisoning. My wife got sick from eating watermelon which had too much pesticides on them.
  24. For so long it's not true... Led Zeppelin rules.
