hard tell, without a better pic. that might be some undercoin. what is in that spot, eagles wing or shoulder area i would guess? I think you should buy it none the less, Sigi, just to have a closer look and solve the puzzle!

Sigi, do you have an image handy for the 1781 spm NOVODEL? Why would a Novodel have been requested or struck, if no original had existed? Was there a rumor or anecdote of such a coin existing?

My first thought would be an altered date. The 1 digits dont seem quite the same in this photo. Have you seen the coin in person?

I will report it. Its a fake,. Gorny provenance or not. The seller has some nice coins otherwise, but a bit ambitious on pricing.

I do not know the ins and outs of the grading business. Is there some sort of insurance or backbone behind the opinions of the obviously fallible experts who entomb such a joke of a fake in a plastic box with an "official" pedigree? a fake is a fake.

Sounds like fun, Bobh! Im thinking of making a fixture out of wood strips, and using some picture frame glass. Im trying different lenses, as well. Im using a Nikon D7000. I dont have a macro lens, but my 70-300mm telephoto is working with an extension tube for close focus. seems to work OK, but focus is a bit of trial and error. The tripod helps ALOT! good tip about the black. some black barbeque grill paint should do the trick.
