  1. it not even the scarce type with upside M mintmark (aka WD,not MD) error. high bidders with low feedback numbers. fishy.
  2. No new coins for me in a LONG time..... not too much since my now 4 year old son was born! My "discretionary" budget is directed elsewhere. But I still like to tune in here regularly, and watch the auctions.
  3. there is something odd about this coin. The details seem too good on the many levels. Is the coin in your hands yet? Is there a Provenance?
  4. Beautiful condition on that one, as well! Thanks for posting. sorry you didnt get it, Sigi.
  5. Here are some examples of 1762 10 Rubles sold at auction in the recent past. Compare closely with your item. http://www.m-dv.ru/catalog/id,30/prohod.html
  6. a dealer once told me the Alex III gold was commonly melted down because of the subsequent reduction in weight standard with the Nicholas II gold introduction.
  7. What an interesting character! Thank you for sharing your experience with Rolf. Again, the stories behind these coins is what make them special in more ways than one.
  8. Thank you for reposting this, Ex4! Its nice to wake up, tune in to the forum, and see my old pics! It brings back memories of a very nice trip to Washington DC, to see my brother and his brand new little girl! The visit to the Smithsonian was serendipedous as I had no idea the collection was on display that day!
  9. I can see the denomination banner for the Elizabeth 2K on image 1, upper right. I can see the word "chetirey" (sorry no russian keys on my netbook) on image 2, diagonally from 9 oclock to 12 oclock, so perhaps the fragment you are seeing is where the "2" for the date is, or just below, maybe a piece of flag? I dont see any baroque elements, or 5K elements, but that doesnt mean they arent under there somewhere. nice coin.
  10. nice coins but not "no reserve" as this usually means low start bid and coin will sell regardless of low bids or could go high with many bidders who want the coin. Your Russian coins are "buy it now" which are fixed price. Nice and safe way for the seller to get a good price, but boring and not a challenge for buyers to get a bargain and have fun with bids.
  11. old coins and new girls would be my preference too..... the opposite, not so much.
  12. thats the all girl band that was arrested during an "unscheduled" performance in a church. They usually perform with bags over their heads. for some reason, they were protesting Putin.
  13. ....... did you go to any coin shops, street markets, or an auction house in search of coins?
  14. seller has many fakes but one is possibly genuine? nope. not a chance. all are fakes.
  15. the coin looks like a typical circulated example, but its a shame it has been cleaned. I would wait for one that is not "restored" my humble advice.
  16. indeed! The die clash is quite clear, and its a very nice coin even without the clash...
  17. An overdates database would be very cool. I have a bunch, and at least one I havent seen anywhere else.
  18. Ok, as depressed as I am over the recent focus on fake russian coins in the forum, here is one that made me laugh. BTW Steve, do genuine Avesta coins qualify for your fakes database? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1787-RUSSIAN-COPPER-COIN-5-KOPEK-KOPEKS-CATHERINE-II-/140981093311?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item20d320c3bf
  19. The hard part is finding the tin from the Sturgeon you fed the coin to!
  20. smuggled out of the Motherland in a tin of Beluga Caviar, no doubt.
