  1. Nice to hear you are still with us, R.W.! Thank you for your many contributions to not only this forum, but to Numismatics, over the years. I am sure I can speak for all reading here who are grateful for your work in Russian Numismatics in particular... THANK YOU! Best of success in your upcoming sales, and may you have no regrets! JCB
  2. I think, at Wine Auctions, unsold lots are cracked open and drank on the spot in the auction venue by all participants. maybe. Thats what I would do.
  3. "Wines from the Massandra Collection, which make up 145 lots of tokays, muscats, sherry and port, were bottled at the winery, which was built in the 1890s. Workers spent three years carving tunnels deep into Crimea's granite mountains, perfecting cellars suitable for aging these unique and treasured fortified wines." Thats one hobby crazier than numismatics...... If you drink your collection, you are pretty much stuck with some empty bottles, no matter how well cared for. But you die happy!
  4. Thats a great coin! I wouldnt call that a filler... thats typical condiion for this series, in my opinion. Its a great catch, especially if reasonably obtained.
  5. I disagree..... coin is BU: Beautifully Ugly!
  6. Hey Marv, put her under the scanning electron micropscope..... do the graders knock of points for crooked molecules? Beautiful coin, by the way. Congratulations. IMHO its a keeper. dont sell. you may regret it one day.
  7. I was watching it, thinking it might be a 75 buck coin but was surprised to see it go over 150 Condition is quite nice. Sorry you didnt get it, Alex.
  8. were you thinking Moscow lettered edge, Alex?

  10. The same principle as the old saying "never buy a car that was built on a friday"
  11. looks like a melted chocolate. Im trying to visualize what that die must have looked like, or how it became so distorted.
  12. Uzdenikov has plenty of Novodel material if i remember correctly. Cant find mine right now, but its here somewhere in my piles.

  14. okay. Ebay is getting lamer all the time. I went to look for some stuff.... (ok, sometimes not coins) and they killed the "search descriptions" option. First they kill the wildcard search. now this. I just dont get it. Are their programmers and servers getting overwhelmed, or is this some kind of tactic to increase ebays bottom line.
  15. wow, great info! of course, I had to go and check all my Elizabeth 2K's I could only find one with enough detail to look for these clues, a 1758 (banner below), and sure enough, a tiny "L" on the saddle.. so MMD!
  16. IMHO that coin is very suspect. In addition to the above observations, there seems to have been an effort to remove casting evidence on the edge. Does it pass the ring test? balance the coin on the tip of your finger, and ding the coin with another coin, gently, and listen for a high pitch ringing tone that lingers. A cast coin will go "clunk" and sound dead. Also, the patina looks suspicious at best.
  17. By the way... dont overlook Polushka of Anna overstruck on Kopeck of Peter II, and Denga of Anna overstruck on Kopek of Peter I ! Also, Peter III 2 Kopek overstruck on kopek of Elizabeth! Good hunting!
  18. every russian coin from this ebay seller is fake. Good study material to help spot the obvious ones, for beginners. http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&item=130824372297&pt=US_World_Coins&_osacat=0&hash=item1e75bd8049&_ssn=banknotyunc&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313&_nkw=russia&_sacat=0&_from=R40
  19. This seller has been all over ebay lately with many fakes both copper and silver. Rarely they are listed as "copy" or "can not be sure if genuine", but mostly no description. The coin you link to is fake. I would never buy ANYTHING from this seller. I have already reported several of his coins, but unless ebay gets multiple electronic reports on a listing or seller, they take NO action.
