  1. I respected Rolf for his knowledge and understanding of true rarities. I agree he had all these little envelopes, coin purses, etc. But I do remember many of his coins - can name most of them in the upcoming auction. Collector's memory works in a strange way. Here is one of the copper coins I purchased from Rolf on one of my visits.
  2. I am familiar with Rolf's coins. Visited him a few times. The prices in upcoming auction still reflect Rolf's wishes, as far as I can tell. So hopefully no disservice is done to the widow.... Even the plugged Peter I rouble still has a high estimate. Rolf thought it as the rarest Peter I rouble and unsuccessfully tried to sell it in many different auctions (with high reserve) - Gorny, Baldwin's, Markov (through Baldwin's).
  3. It would be great! I will be there on Tuesday, but probably only for half a day.
  4. Looks like the catalog is up: https://www.sincona.com/Homepage_ru.Html Is anyone going? I am. Missed it last year, but want to handle some of those coins this time around
  5. There is a series of books by A.E. Denisov on Russian paper money. Part II has a chapter on State Bank Metal Deposit Receipts. The act of Ministry of Finance from 1877 brought them to life. They were used to pay customs duties and were purchased using gold (Russian and foreign gold coins, ingots, etc.).
  6. These are probably question to Shkurko, but I do not know how to get in touch with her.
  7. Diakov's books on medals cover 1672 to 1917 Shkurko's book on medals covers 1919 to 1991. I am not aware of a book on modern Russian medals. What did you want to find out? Click on "More Reply Options" (next to "Post") and then click on attach picture. There is a size limit.
  8. someone already has it, I just do not know who.
  9. The coin I showed is not from the ground, like other coins in this link, so the price is drastically different from the prices you are quoting. I bought it in 2008, on the peak of the prices, so I'd rather not disclose the price
  10. I used to have this one, which I thought was quite nice.
  11. I am planning to see it in Chicago next month. Also will discuss it with some experts there. Will report after.
  12. Reminds me an old joke - "My middle name is Lucky... my first name is Un".
  13. Thank you, Steve. Yes, Monday in Russian carries totally different meaning
  14. Steve did a good job there. Small correction - "год" (singular) is 1, "года" is 2-4, "лет" is 5-0. And in larger numbers it is not quite as described, but close, depending on the number. For example, 11 is "лет" (ends with 1), but 101 is "год" (also ends with 1)
  15. There a huge discussion on the varieties of narrow monogram on coins.su. You probably have seen it.
  16. Yes, they are nice. BTW, in 60D that is not a D, but hammer and sickle.
  17. It makes sense that the one in high relief is of Hungarian make - the face of Lenin is not done in the Russian Soviet style, just liike in the German one.
  18. I find the one sided ones to be interesting. Must be some kind of die trials or possibly they were meant to be inserted in to something more elaborate. The one with legend "V. I. Lenin" is not of Russian make. Must be German (DDR) or something like that.
  19. Bob mentioned 1775 Moscow rouble that he likes. I actually remember Bob bidding on this coin (and winning it) in 2000 at Reneissanse auction in Philadelphia. I was sitting right behind him. And, Steve D'Ippolito was right next to Bob. And I remember Steve bidding on 1854 rare "honest error" kopek. He was so excited, that he was bidding standing up. But, I do not think the luck was on his side that day. How quickly the time goes...
  20. I agree with Steve. There is an issue of the journal in the works. Good articles are already submitted. But the progress is slow, since it is hard to fill the shoes of the great editors the journal had in the past. So for now it is just a labor of love...
  21. I was thinking about buying a few bottles (cheap ones) and drinking them, but forgot about the auction. Let's see if there are unsold lots.
