Hey Grivna

Do you know the best way to get something written in permeate marker off. Somebody at work used a permanent marker on a whiteboard once and people were trying to rub in off to no avail.

Then somebody else showed me a trick. You write over the permeate marker writing with a normal whiteboard marker then when you wipe it the writing comes off (you could probably dab it off with cotton wool).

Not saying you should try this on a coin but it definitely works.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I doubt this ink is of similar chemical composition to the stuff that is in permanent markers.

I have toyed with the idea of trying to remove it chemically (acetone?), but I think that even if that was successful, I would probably be left with an untoned area (where the ink used to be) and that would not be an improvement.

So I have left it alone.

Japanese? Link please - I might be able to translate :ninja:

It was a multiple-coin lot (advertised as 8 coins, but actually there were 9). Only the 1902 50 kopeek coin was pictured in the auction catalog. And since I didn't win the lot, I can't supply my own pictures, either. ;)

You can find the auction catalog on the http://www.sixbid.com website (Hess-Divo, Auction 306, lot 499).

Thank you Bobh and Grivna1729 for the explanation about the markings by some collectors and thank you Bob for the Uzdenikov reference. I guess it's equivalent to some "Ex Libris" stamps on rare books. :ninja:

Here is something on the obverse that also appears to be some sort of stamp (?) that someone has tried to

erase.

Too bad ... 1872 is a fairly tough year, and if it weren't for the damage, that would be quite a find! ;)

But maybe you can get it cheaply??? ;)

Try using vodka, or the stuff that ladies use to take of the nail varnish (acetone), AFTER YOU SOAK THE COIN IN SOAP FOR A WEEK. Dont you people know how to treat coins without ruining them?

Maybe because the authenticity of the coin is in dispute? :ninja:

Interesting enough that when I contacted the seller directly via EBay, he was very polite and cooperative . After brief email exchange I was able to convience him that the coin listed was of a questionable origin. Has anyone dealt with the guy before ?
