  1. I'm pretty sure that the description is accurate. It's brass.
  2. Sorry, I didn't spot that you had both sides shown. OK, it looks interesting but we still need weight & measurement. And maybe a picture shot in natural light?
  3. Without a view of the other side it's hard to be sure but sadly, apart from spielmarks, Reader's Digest produced replicas of this very coin which turn up frequently. So weight, diameter and clear pictures of both sides are pretty much essential in identifying your piece.
  4. I've been after one of these for some time. Not particularly rare, just elusive. Nearly missed this one as it had a large coating of candle wax, there's still a bit to remove yet. My question, at 26.5mm is this Henin 272?
  5. Pat, you are dooming me to penury. In the past you've given me ideas for expanding my collection, advice on books that I really should have in my library; and now this. My wife has had a Nexus 7 which I have foolishly just promised to upgrade on the strength of that picture alone. And, for a Luddite, I'm finding it very user friendly.
  6. It was in a collection I bought about two years ago.
  7. No, it's just been floating around my desk for a while.
  8. That's made me dig out an old 1976 Krause where it's listed as C#111. My current Krause, 5th edit. 2006 lists only C# 111.1 1803 EM. I agree it must be fake but hadn't realised that it was economically worth while to copy.
  9. As far as I can see this coin isn't listed in SCWC, which shouldn't come as a surprise as it looks rather crudely done. Any ideas please?
  10. Valencia and Madrid both have thriving weekend open air coin markets.
  11. Just found this in a job lot and I now know exactly what Vern means. There are so many variables with this medal, I'm still no nearer working out which is mine. White metal. 27mm, 9.1gr.
  12. How many years before these start appearing on coin forums with the question "Does anyone know..........?"
  13. I am so glad that I made no suggestions on this. Why? Well for a start I must have at least 8 medals from Montserrat and have visited the monastery many times. Me, observant or what? I've even been on the annual pilgrimage or aplec which, to be fair is more like a mobile feast, party and concert in one. The Catalans know how to enjoy themselves.
  14. This thread comes just as there is a loose button floating around my desk, normally a candidate for the junk box. It turns out to be a 25mm uniform button from the West London 4th Middlesex Rifles, 1860-62 by Firmin Ltd, Birmingham & London. Pleasing to me as most of my adult life was spent in West London.
  15. If you purchased this recently, it's likely that I was the underbidder.
  16. A quick scan of some small medallions, more to folLow when there's time.
  17. The phrase is from: Mulier, ecce filius tuus … Ecce Mater tua (John, xix. 26, 27.)(Woman behold your son, and you behold your mother) and is mainly found on Spanish and Maltese religious artefacts.
  18. This partially illustrates the results of two types of engraving tool. What astounds me is that these were done freehand.
  19. Thanks agan Frank. Middle French was part of my degree course. Forty some years later, it finally becomes useful.
  20. A very quick scan. Not all love tokens, one's for Onions another for Buttercup and yet another for Victoria's Jubilee, so best just say "Engraved Coins".
  21. Yes, you did very well with that. Scrap trays can be good value, the other coin you got along with this is pretty sweet too.
  22. Prompted by another post. This Eddie halfpenny love token is one of my favourites, and a work of art in its own right. (also a real problem to photograph properly)
