In the First Republic, until 1934, there were the shields of the nine states plus the federal "Bindenschild". During the authoritarian regime ('34-'38) the state shields were gone. In the Second Republic, they first used the nine state shields only. Then, in mid-1964, a tenth shield with the eagle was added. In 1996 the federal eagle shield was gone again, so since then we have had the nine state shields ... But on quite a few coins (and on all silver coins nowadays) they use individual obverses and reverses. Nicer for most collectors. Christian Thanks Christian I didn't realize that, I am struck by a lot of the designs on the Austrian Schillings and also find the shield reverses very attractive.
