  1. Thank you. Now, I got my memories in order again.
  2. Ah, yes. Thank you, scottishmoney. Wasn't it in the 1800s that they placed the Hanover shield on some of their coins as well?
  3. I was looking for this thread! Nice coins you've added there. That last one is amazing. Allow me a question tho. The four shields on the back are twice for England and Scotland combined, once for Ireland and then there is one shield that is french. Is it part of a claim to the French throne?
  4. Are you trying to proselytize me, oh source of the hammered ones?
  5. Nice additions there, Clive! I can see why you like hammered ones.
  6. Nice ones! I like the 3 cent piece for its roman numerals. Cuban and Portuguese coins have this feature as well. Maybe that could be a nice theme for a collection; Modern coins with roman numerals for their denomination. But I am going off topic. The seated liberty is quite an awkward engraving isn't it? The face looks really alien.
  7. This half crown is beautiful... what toning. Looking forward to more of your coins!
  8. Well, I just wrote whatever came to my mind. Wish I knew more (i. e. anything) about it. Keep the nice ones coming!
  9. The online translations rock! Well, I think he means, that by arming himself with the Reich he only wants to protect the people. The lower portion of the coin reads: Das Reich erhalten den 16 November 1797. That means: The Reich (Empire) received on the 16th November 1797. I guess there is a single context behind those two lines. The syntax is horrible tho. It could of course also mean all the things the person on the coin has around him. The glorious history of the holy roman empire (Roman helmet) and the past before that (Greek helmet, the rod of Asklepios, a Greek shield, a Lyre... The rest I cannot recognize). Maybe they had managed to create a connection between their family (or the Reich) and ancient Rome (through the Holy Roman Empire)/ Greece (Don't know how... Maybe over Aeneas, who fled to Rome. I think this connection had been used by the French at some point.) . I don't really know my way around Preussen and how they used history and mythology at the time.
  10. Beautiful medal. The sentence on the reverse is a bit weird syntactically. He says "Nur Euch zu schützen will ich mit diesem mich rüsten". "Only you to protect i want with this arm me". would be the word for word translation. Does he mean the "Reich" with "with this"?
  11. Well, if you look to the right of the portrait you will see why it was probably cleaned. I think this had some kind of aggressive oxidation. This has also left its mark on the face. The front part has been damaged slightly. I guess that someone cleaned it and then put it in a lot. Maybe because he/she didn't like the result.
  12. I got my first Wheat cent in a lot today. It has suffered badly because of harsh cleaning, but I like it.
  13. These two were removed from my girlfriend's wallet. She was in Germany for a (sadly short) visit and had these two beauties along. Of course she agreed on me removing the coins. I didn't nick them.
  14. Ha! At last I got a sixpence from Fiji. And for quite a little money as well. This is probably one of my favorite coin designs... even tho I have no idea why. Along with it came this:
  15. Well, you're right. Let's solve this when we reach it. Beautiful photograph of the last coin you presented by the way, Vfox.
  16. Wow... Quite a speed at the moment in here. Beautiful coins. My next one is around the time of Justinian, so I can relax and enjoy the show. By the way... should we reach a time where years are not determinable, what do we do? Separate in decades? Or halfs of centuries?
  17. Aaah! Preaching to the choir then. Well, your entire collection is preaching to mine. It seems to be the sort of collection that cannot really get boring at any time. By the way... if I remember correctly, the decree concerning the cemeteries was first applied in Germany. Outside of France that is.
  18. You are running into open doors, as we say in Germany. I agree with you what Napoleon is concerned. Probably the similarity of a poorly planed Russian campaign also helps this way of thinking about Napoleon and nearly equating him with Hitler. When I try to recall the first thing I learned in school about Napoleon then I would have to say that it was exactly that and that it was even taught to us with Hitler as a parallel. By the way, Napoleon also introduced the "Décret sur les sépultures" in 1804. Cemeteries had to then be build outside cities and villages, because it was deemed unsanitary to continue with the practice of burying within the urban areas. One direct consequence of this was the San Michele cemetery outside Venice; the most beautiful cemetery every built (in my most humble opinion). Napoleon's actions also resulted to the removal of Venice from the Ionian islands, which inevitably led to the Ionikon Kratos (the United States of the Ionian Islands) and then to their unification with mainland Greece. So, we Greeks should be quite thankful to him for breaking the firm grasp of Venice on these Islands. Thank you for sharing all this, elverno. I've always liked collections with a special interest behind them.
  19. Absolutely beautiful and impressive collection. I am really glad I went through this thread today. Your time frame is really interesting and the fact that you don't confine your collection geographically is a guaranty for nice coins. Am I right to assume that you connect it to the French revolution and the downfall of Napoleon, right? Or were there other reasons behind that choice? I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Continuing his work (and that is a very nice site) is a great way to show your respect.
  20. The farthing is beautiful. What character!!!
  21. 1819 The condition is not great, but that is my only Ionikon Kratos coin.
  22. I just got a 2007 at least EF 1 euro cent coin at the university restaurant. While this is no big deal, I hadn't seen any of these small coins in circulation yet. The only 2007 coins I had gotten till now were one or two Rome of Treaty coms. It was nice to find one. Now all I want is a one euro coin with the new map.
  23. Thank you scottishmoney. I got a George V Hong Kong 1923 1 Cent today and that has an even longer die break spanning the words "George V King". I could only see it with my x4 magnifying glass tho.
  24. This day has been absolutely horrible so I felt quite happy when I got my second Half Piastre coin from Cyprus. This is in a better condition than another one I already had. After a good look at it I also discovered a little error on it (could somebody let me know how you would call this kind of error?). Anyway... this and my cute girl were my mood savers today.
  25. Today the mailman brought me a nice box full of world coins I bought off a friend. Lots of nice coins, all circulated, but mostly from areas I've never been to. Still haven't gone through all of them as there are about 120 coins in the box. In it, unexpectedly, my first US coin ever. A Lincoln cent from 1981. The interesting part is that the Obverse seems off center. The rim over Lincoln is nearly non existent while the rim on the bottom is too wide. I apologize for the bad photograph but this little thing is a pain to take a picture of and I am just getting to know the equipment of our photographer! Anyway, I am aware that this is nothing special. It was still a nice surprise. Can't wait to get home to look at the rest. PS: Oops... I got my fingerprint all over Lincoln.
