Kennedy Halves

Dads Stuff

Recommended Posts

My brother in law called the other day saying he had a Rubbermaid tub full of Kennedy Halves from his father's estate. He wants me to come look at them this weekend. I haven't really worked much with Kennedys, but in looking at the Red Book, they are not highly regarded as a collectible item in circulated grades.

It appears that circulated 1964 coins are worth melt value. Correct?

Circulated coins 1965 to present are pocket change. True?

Thanks

Linda

Also remember that recent Kennedys were not released for circulation. So rolls of 1999 (I think was the first year for this) thru 2005 were sold at a premium by the mint. No general release through banks.

I think that started in 2002, as I have received rolls and loose coins from 1999-2001 from banks and slot machines in Vegas.

Art is correct, they have not released Circs since '99...

But Jeff is also correct in that I have also found post 99 Kennedys in rolls and in Vegas... So we have to assume they were purchased from the mint and then released into the wild by some desparate sole... or the collectors children :ninja:

It seems I was half right, only the 2001-D coins were released into circulation (I believe the 2000 both P and D were released as they are quite common in circulation). I dug up this press release on the web from the US mint in 2001:

United States Mint Offers 2001-dated Kennedy Half Dollars In Two-Roll Sets and Bags Beginning April 12

WASHINGTON -- The United States Mint announced today that 2001-dated Kennedy half dollars will go on sale beginning at noon (Eastern Time) on April 12, 2004. The 2001-dated Kennedy half dollars are available in two-roll sets (20 coins per roll), including one Philadelphia and one Denver mint mark coin roll. They are also available in bags of 200 that include an equal number of half dollars with Philadelphia and Denver mint marks.

Of the 19.5 million 2001-dated “D” mint mark Kennedy half dollars produced, only 12,334,000 were released into circulation by the Federal Reserve. Of the 21.2 million 2001-dated “P” mint mark Kennedy half dollars produced, none was released by the Federal Reserve into circulation.

Each coin roll in a two-roll set is wrapped in a specially designed United States Mint paper coin wrap that prominently displays a “P” or “D,” representing the roll’s mint of origin and “$10.00” representing its dollar value. These rolls feature half dollars in circulating quality, struck on our main production floors at the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver.

Each 2001-dated Kennedy half dollar bag is filled with 200 half dollars in circulating quality, also struck on our main production floors at the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver. Each bag is marked with both a “P” and a “D” representing the mints of origin and “$100,” the dollar value of its contents. The 130,000 two-roll sets available will sell for $35.50 each, and the 20,000 bags of 200 coins will sell for $135.00 each. More 200-coin bags and two-roll sets will be produced as customer demand warrants.

Customers can purchase the 2001-dated Kennedy half dollar two-roll sets and bags by visiting the United States Mint’s secure website, www.usmint.gov, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT. Hearing- and speech-impaired customers may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468). A shipping and handling fee of $4.95 per order will be added to all domestic orders. Please allow approximately two to three weeks for delivery.

There are a few of the uncs that will bring a pretty hefty premium in typical unc. The '86's and '91-D are the standouts and bring $5 or more. There are numerous dates that bring $1 or more. There are no scarce unc regular issue Kennedys and most appear in mint sets. Rolls exist for all the dates and most are fairly common but demand for Kennedys is high so prices are strong.

All dates have a substantial premium in gem and these are actively collected by many people. Choice and superb gems bring prices up to several thousand dollars. These are unlikely to be in such an accumulation but you never know.

There are also numerous varieties in many dates. Few of these are worth more than ten or twenty dollars in circulated condition but there are some rarities which can bring tens of thousands of dollars in XF.

Hi,

It's almost impossible for me to list the potential in a pile of kennedys like that. Variety collectors drool over them.

There are many Doubled Die Obverse and Doubled Die reverse Kennedy halves.

There are many, many more than the 1974 D DDO that people think about.

You might think it tedious but I would check each and every coin for varieties.

There are nice DDOs and even a TDO on a 1964 D Kennedys, DDOs on 1964 Philadelphia mint coins.

There are DDO and DDR versions of 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 D and 1969 D , 40% silver pieces

There are numerous Doubled dies on Nickel-clad coins. dates include 1971, 1971 D, 1972, 1972 D , 1973, 1973 D, 1974 D, 1977D and more.

With that many halves, there has to be a few in there.

Have Fun,

Bill

yes! You must search for the double-die varieties. The doubling can be subtle but still visible on uncirc or AU coins. You'll need a loupe(8x) and it's like a treasure hunt... sort of. I found 2 DDR 1972-D Kennedys in my mom's collection. They may not be ultra-scarce and high value- but uncommon varieties are always fun to find.

New to this forum myself, I guess I should get over to the intros board.

I just like to disperse the roll of Ikes around the country each month. I don't search them.

I did used to search half rolls as a kid though, tons of fun I agree

I do better with coinstar machines these days

Boomer sooner, yeah, I got my masters at oU. It basically sucks as a college, but thanks :ninja:
