jlueke
Official Byzantine coins of this period (6th century) were nowhere near as nice as this "Barbarian" coin. The best gothic coin I've noticed

Art
That's a neat coin. Why is it called "Barbarian"? Is this before the term came to be used to mean savage and without regard for others?

jlueke
jlueke can provide his answer, but mine would be because at the time everyone outside of the Byzantine Empire was considered a barbarian. That's basically it. If I remember correctly the Greeks and Persians both considered all outsiders barbarians and the Romans were no different. So the Goths (that coin is an Ostrogothic one), Moors, Arabs, Franks, Lombards, Alemans, and Saxons were all barbarians. This barbarian must have retained the services of a previous die engraver, or perhaps the guys was a Gothic slave to begin with...
