lincoln copper penny question

Tough question as is. You would nead to be more specific about years and dates and their quantities as well as searched or not searched for errors/varieties.

If not searched by you, you may want to search with the assistance of coppercoins before discarding them at the bank for face.... http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php or http://www.lincolncentresource.com/

If you have specific questions about any of the coins post here and I am sure many will be willing to help. Photos are a great help as well....

Sell them for $5 each on ebay.

On a more serious note, I would keep them. I doubt that circulated copper cents will ever be worth a considerable amount, but BU specimens might fetch a higher price later down the road. I've searched through easily $100 worth of pennies, and I've only come across several dozen BU coins from before '75 in circulation. Just realize that while wheaties will probably be snatched up quickly, most people won't think twice about spending a BU memorial penny until it is entirely ruined. Assume that even a '59 or '68-S released into circulation is probably doomed to the ravages of circulation.

I save all the copper pennies I come across, so I wouldn't cash them in, but that's just me.

Think of saving your pre-1982's as a 2 for 1 deal, they have a melt value of just a wee bit over 2 cents now. I save them to the point of buying $25 boxes of cents every once in a while and going through them for all the coppers, and wheats, occasional errors, older Canadians etc.

I would keep them even for the fact that the price of copper is still going up anything over 1982 is only copper clad not worth much. I would suggest reading up on pennies and learn all you can.

Totally agree its worth seperating the copper dates and bagging them.Almost every coin person i know is doing that.I hummed and hawed seeing it as a waste of time but i do it religously every few days now , seperate the copper into an old bank bag.

I think the thought that swayed me was when i asked myself why are pennies not made of copper anymore..when you realise the answer you too will hoard them.It is worth noting though it is illegal to knowingly melt them down. :ninja:

You have to remember too, that this was a lot different than the silver change in the 1960s. I remember in 1982, when they switched to zinc, and everyone thought that pennies minted befoer 1982 would be worth multiples of face in just a few years, but it never happened until about 2008! It would have been like switching to clad coins back in 1945 instead of 1964, so it didn't happen as quickly as we were expecting, but sure enough, now there are not nearly as many floating around, and they are actually worth more than face. But then again, with interest rates at 1%, it really doesn't cost me much to have 10,000 copper pennies in the back of my closet!
