Do you know anything about this independent nation - Azerbaijan ? According to Ron wise website, the country is not recognised by the world community. Maybe someone can enlighten us more on this country, history and interesting information. Let's have a discussion on this country.

I just acquire a rare piece of 1992 250 Manat first prefix and the fifth note -

A/1 00000005 for my collection. Here is the scan below.

Hera are some information that i have search and collected about Azerbaijian country...hope this will help. :ninja:

Independent Azerbaijan

The declaration of independence was followed by the dissolution of the Communist Party, although most of its membership retained their socio-political positions. The last party secretary, Ayaz N. Mutalibov, was elected president of the republic in September 1991, and the Supreme Soviet formally implemented the declaration of independence on October 18. Meanwhile, the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh continued despite efforts to negotiate a settlement. Early in 1992, Karabakh's Armenian leadership proclaimed an independent republic. In what was now a full scale war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Armenians gained the upper hand, with covert assistance from the Russian Army. Major atrocities were committed by both sides, with the Khojaly massacre of Azeri civilians having particular relevance to the Azeri side. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Az...dent_Azerbaijan

From CIA FactBook

Azerbaijan - a nation with a Turkic and majority-Muslim population - was briefly independent from 1918 to 1920; it regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost 16% of its territory and must support some 528,000 internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous, and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled.

Culture

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani, a member of the Oguz subdivision of the Turkic language family, and is spoken by around 95% of the republic’s population, as well as about a quarter of the population of Iran. Its closest relatives in language are Turkish and Turkmen. As a result of the language policy of the Soviet Union, Russian is also commonly spoken as a second language among the urbane. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azerbaijan#Culture

my banknote theme is the same as my coin collecting theme--if it's shiny or pretty then i'm in

sure, it's unfocussed but oddly satisfying.

i like that S$20 note ... especially the obverse.

The Singapore Bird Series is a wonderfully designed banknotes. The features birds are common in Singapore although there are not many in the protected nature especially in reservoirs and catchment area. The $20 olive sunbird is a common sight in Singapore. The male species is a purple throated sunbird. I once caught one of them. Fed it with honey and release them a few days later. Just for a closer study of them. They belong to the wild and therefore I have not intend to keep it as a pet.

The obverse of the $20 is the International Changi Airport. I used to work in the Singapore Airlines Engineering Company as a IT Project Manager. It's one of the busiest airport in the world. The engineering company are also busy with many maintenance and repair. Luckily, I only take charge of one of the IT project. The IT computerization is just huge as compared to any company's IT project. Currently, there are two terminals. Terminal Three should be ready soon. Terminal 4 is in the pipeline. That's the concorde that once operate from Singapore and UK. My vivid experience with concorde in 1983 when I was army training in the jungle of one of Singapore island ( Pulau Tekong ). The ground just shake when the concorde passed above me. That supersonice plane is really a noisy one. I will always remember that. I have seen and heard jet fighters such as F5E Tiger and F16 zooming passed on the runway or above but the impact of a concorde is just different. It's really loud. No wonder it was discontinued. :ninja:

It's nice to know that you specializes on theme collection. Any particular reason why you specializes on archaeology motifs. Is it in any way related to your field of profession. I think Turkey and Libya banknotes do have some of these archaeology motifs printed on the reverse of the note. I am not sure whether old ruin buildings are considered archaeology motifs. Greece should have quite a fair bit on their banknotes. I have a Cyprus 5 Pounds banknote with a head. I believe it is a archaeology motifs. It will be nice if China features some of the archaeology motifs from the First Emperor of China - the famous

I belive that the cyprus 5 pounds with head are actually a Limestone head of a young man. The limestone head dates from the 5th century B.C. and was found in the area of Potamia village. Got this information from central bank of cyprus.... :ninja:

Just received this rare 1941 Morocco 5 Francs Solid 777. :ninja: Earlier, I did not know that Morocco were under the French influence. The design of this 1941 5 Francs banknote tell everything about Morocco and France. The denomination is also in Francs. Quite an interesting piece for my collection which unfortunately it is not a 555555. Nevertheless, it is a good piece of solid to represent the country, Morocco in my collection.

Been working on US Silver Certs. since my pop found one in change. The collection will come to a close once I find the budget (couple star notes go easily for a few grand).

Trying to figure out a new series to pursue while I hunt the last of the silver certs.

Guest Aidan Work

My specialist area of banknote collecting is the British Commonwealth.I even include banknotes from Ireland,Zimbabwe,& Somaliland. There are some British Commonwealth countries that never issued banknotes, but did issue postal orders,so I collect these as well, plus any other British Commonwealth postal orders which were issued by banknote-issuing countries.

Well to be honest I'm all over the place with my banknotes right now.....but for a few different reasons. Firstly I collect larger amounts of Asian and Middle Eastern countries for use in some of my art projects. I use them for political whatnot in my graphic work, paintings, sculptures after firing, and metalworking as accents at times. I like the social implications of using money as form of artistic expression, and the political ones using them from countries the US is at odds with. Now, some notes do indeed get destroyed in this process, but I feel it's worth the damage to me. (hides from stones being thrown)

As for my actual collection of banknotes, well so far, Russia, Austria and any WWII and before German notes, including Notgelds if they are interesting enough.

And the newer series of notes from Zambia with the large eagle sitting on the right of the note. They are absolutely gorgeous, so far I have the 20, 500, and 1000 kwacha, and will be getting a 50, 100, 5000, 10000, 20000, and 50000 kwacha shortly to complete the set itself, then I will concentrate on getting serial numbers, replacement notes, and errors. I just started to collect these a few weeks ago, and fell in love with the designs, just blows my boring US notes out of the water.
