One of the interesting way to start your banknote collection is to specialize on certain area of interest. World notes such as with a picture of a ship, fish, bird, cars, aeroplane. It can also be error notes, special numbers etc. I shall start them with birds, ships and special numbers.

I dont specialize in any particular theme. I just buy what I think looks nice, and if it is a reasonable price. I do have certain areas that I would like to expand, but I dont have any preset theme.

Looking at some collectors out there who have specialized in a country, region or a central theme is pretty neat to see, but I don't specialize. I collect banknotes that I find to be attractive. I have read the books that say that you should find a specialization area to make the collection cohesive and to have an overall theme, but I just can't limit myself to that. I guess you could say that I could make a few smaller specialized collections from what I have, but I just keep them seperated by country with a cover sheet for each country as well. I would like to try to get something going eventually, though... I have been trying to amass more 'sets' or 'runs' in a printing series lately, but I haven't been able to do more than that; There's just too much out there for me to choose from right now.

Right now I am specializing in the notes of Yugoslavia, and the republics that were part of Yugoslavia before the break-up in the 1990's. This coincides with my coin collection (which also specializes in the Yugoslavia region). I also have collections (both coin & banknotes) of the former Soviet states, but that collection has been put on hold for now, as my interest in them has waned for the time being.

Now that's an amazing collection. No, I don't really specialize in banknotes as they often are leftovers from overseas trips or something that I found to be too fancy and kept them.

I believe you travel quite often. It does help in your collection to collect those leftovers but usually they are small denomination notes. Have a specialized collection does help to add both interest and value into it. There are so many notes around and by specializing, you will also gain deeper knowledge into these notes.

There are several areas I like and hope to pursue, not the least of which is always keeping an eye out for notes with snakes on them.

My banknote theme is one note from each country in the world. It's fun and I have quite a few notes, but many to go.

I like your serial number collections. That must be very hard to pursue. The notes are beautiful.

Theme collection such as banknotes from the Commonwealth countries are very popular specialized collection. For those with a little bit more budget and willingness to spare the time and money, collectors goes for world rarest banknotes. The returns for such specialized collection are usually very good over the years. :ninja:

I collect banknotes from Portugal and its former colonies as well as Italy, Greece, Egypt and Sweden. Also some series from Singapore, Australia and the Philippines. I am also interested in theme collection with banknotes showing archaeology motifs.

Yes, I am into archaeology, or rather more specific, laboratorical archaeology. There are some very nice motifs from the countries around the mediteranean as well as south america and many more. It is also interesting what the countries chooses to put up on their banknotes from their past.

I do not know much about archaeology but I personally love to collect antiques or any past items used during the past but not in a big way but in a small way. Of course, old banknotes, I did it in a big way in my Straits Settlement collection.

I believe Singapore will one day put something historical into the banknotes. Two days ago in Singapore, a Singapore University lecturer manage to find a huge grave belonging to a 19th Century Tycoon in Singapore. It's a huge grave with a Shikh guardman status about 2m tall build beside the grave. In Singapore, there are many road names named after famous businessmen and people from the early Singapore. Not sure whether this happen to other countries in general.

Wow! ........might need to spend 5 digit USD to get those like yours......I specialized my banknotes to Malaysian Pre-independance era......but, also have some from other countries.......Japan, Singapore, Brunei, Iraq.....to date, not yet satisfied what i have......

Keep searching for those good ones for your specialized collection. The earlier you continue with your specialised collection, the faster and more impressive collection you gather. I believe you termed Malaysian Pre-independnce era banknotes as Straits Settlements, British North Borneo and Malaya banknotes. Their prices are still climbing especially those scarcer high grade condition ones. Collect early before they are beyond our reach. :ninja:
