Ian
Brings a tear to the eye at first. A 1745 shilling that didn't quite make it unscathed. Nice VF / EF(ish) coin with jewellery accoutrement on top. LIMA below bust signifying to the world that the silver was plundered from Spanish treasure ships returning laden with silver pieces of eight from Peru. The year also signified a turbulent time in Scotland with Bonnie Prince Charlie was busy stirring up the second Jacobite rebellion. Coin is probably salvageable, but in the years i've had it, i've never had the heart to sanction the surgery required.
ccg
Nice coin. I usually just leave coin jewelery as-is, since I consider it to be part of the coin's character.
Scottishmoney
Back in 2001 I gave my wife a 1901 Maundy set for her charm bracelet, she got it on Maundy Thursday of course, it had been looped for wearing on a chain so there it is.
Art
I like it. After all that's just another part of the coin's life. I say use it and enjoy it.
Ian
This 1745 6d was not quite so fortunate in the treatment it received. Again, (sadly) a high grade coin with original lustre still prominent..... but George II appears to have been hit by a musket ball to the head. Those pesky Jacobites no doubt!
