Can coins be exported from Poland?

I think I remember reading some discussions on this forum about how foreign collectors cannot bid on coins at Polish auctions because Poland does not allow them to be exported. Yet, I see eBay listings like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-kopecks-1889-NGC-gra...c#ht_500wt_1154

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-Penni-1895-NGC-grade...=item27b2f32491

Was I mistaken?

Description says that seller will ship worldwide. Can anybody shed some light on Polish law as it applies to export of coins?

As far as I know, there are no restrictions for exporting coins from Poland, especially foreign coins. I believe Russia may be the only country to have such restrictions on historic and valuable items, but even with these restrictions, there are apparently ways of circumventing regulations.

Unfortunately not true. There are heavy restrictions from Poland. You have to get a permit from some Ministry or other; auction houses I've talked to are very serious about this.

Yes, exporting old coins from Poland is illegal. However, coins can be sold to foreigners, but it is their problem how to export the coin(s) (which in any case will be an illegal action).

Sorry about that. ;)

The information I had was given to me by some Polish friends who have brought back Russian coins from Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia. From what I was told, the only thing needed was proof of purchase.

I never asked them about Polish coins. ;)

Either the information was wrong, or I misunderstood. :ninja:

Thank you, Steve, for the correction.

Until recently it was prohibited to export coins older than 55 years

from Poland. You had to have the consent of the Minister of Culture.

However, at the beginning of this month a regulation was enacted that it

is allowed to export each coin.

This is 100% true and confirmed information.

Thanks. Do you have any website link /news to confirm this?

I'm checking this information with my contacts at the major auction houses in Poland.

I hope you're right!

I hope this is true as back in May, after winning some lots in an auction in Poland I had to have them sent here from Germany.

I think prices realized in Polish auctions, especially in the $5000 and less range, will soon start moving up.

Does this $5000 limit include Buyer's commissions or taxes? Or is it just the hammer price?

One of the large Polish coin auction houses also confirmed this news. All coins priced below 16,000 Zl can be exported without permission.

Thanks again
