What is so special about this coin?

This coin was recently offered in a major European auction.

It is in nice shape ("Vorzüglich"), so a premium price can be expected.

However, the coin brought an astonishing 6,500 Euros (exactly 65 times estimate, [$8,132.50 according to xe.com]). Presumably, there is the juice to add to this price.

This seems unusually high to me.

Any ideas?

Hi!

The price is all about large eagle,

usually 1810 comes with narrow one.

No catalog I have does not show this variety.

Books show same eagle on 1809 5kopeek and its (Bitkin R4).

Thank you for the information. :ninja:

This 1810-EM large eagle variety is not listed in GM, nor in Brekke, nor in Bitkin. I presume it is a rarity known only to a few copper specialists. This is certainly the first that I have ever heard of it.

I checked the auction catalog; they didn't catch it either. First one I've seen. Very nice.

Curious. If you can read this Russian forum thread:

http://coins.su/forum/index.php?showtopic=31452

you'll find out that the author of that topic is saying that this 1810 5 kop coin turned out to be a high quality cast forgery!

Hi Alex, I don't read Russian, won't be the only one. What does the thread say? Is that die combination seen for the first time or was it already known?

In other words, would this be the cast copy of an existing coin? Thanks in avance, Sigi

Just says that it turned out to be a cast fake, produced by exact casting method (very possibly the centrifugal method) Another one or two surfaced as well. No record of such original coin in existance. Obviously, it is possible to produce a fantasy mule without copying the original coin.

Soon enough they will learn how tomake a galvanocopy without questionable edging. And then we are all s...wd.
