The strange red color is accurate. I've never figured out why though I suppose it could have been painted this way. I've had it for several years and just rephotographed it yesterday as part of my project of replacing all the old scans on my website.

Any ideas?

My guess is that it was exposed to iron oxide, which would account for the red colour on the piece.

That makes more sense than paint. Looks really strange :ninja:

I have had bronzes that color from time to time but never knew what caused the unnnatural red tone. Maybe as Scottishmoney says, it was exposed to iron oxide pigment somehow.

I agree with Scottishmoney. The red color is usual from being exposed to iron rich soil. Do you know if this coin was dug up?

I'm not sure of its origin before it got to me several years ago. Looks like it could have been dug considering the little crusties on it... Thanks for the ideas guys :ninja:
