BEWARE - Fraud on ebay.com?

Добро пожаловать, kisenish! :lol::ninja:

Thank you VERY much for this information ...

By the way, since we last communicated, I managed to find a 1902 poltina. You can see it here, along with some other Russian coins in my collection: My Coin Gallery. I'm always interested in good coins from the period of Nicholas II, and especially the 50 kopeek pieces. There is a 1909 poltina for sale right now on eBay, but it has already gone out of my reach, I am afraid (overbid by someone in Russia ... maybe the Russian National Bank is trying to buy it??).

Good luck with this scammer, and also with your own coins! I always like to look at your auctions, even if I can't always buy something. And hopefully, we will hear more from you in the future! There are some fine collectors and even well-known authorities (R.W. Julian, for example) who frequent this forum, as I am sure you have noticed.

To the admin:

Of course, I have a legal proof - the coin I reported is in my safe :ninja: I just wanted to protect the buyers from the evident fraud but you are hindering me

Hi again,

This time I will try to conform to the forum rules :ninja:

What do you think, are these the same coins? For me, they look pretty similar:

http://cgi.ebay.de/Kreuzrubel-1725-Peter-I...7QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.de/RUSSIAN-COIN-SILVER-ROU...1QQcmdZViewItem

Interestingly, all the coins offered by this seller you can find in shops on eBay.de

What do you think about?

Alexey, welcome to CoinPeople. :ninja:

I greatly appreciate your desire to protect the buyers from obvious fraud. You did the right thing by informing eBay of these auctions. They will cancel the auctions and hopefully ban the seller.

However, there are some legal liability issues that prevent us from publishing this type of information on the forum.

I find it interesting that the 2 coins appear to have identical toning, identical marks and an identical flan flaw, all in the identical locations.

It sure looks like the same coin to me and I find it exceedingly difficult to understand how any fair and reasonable person could reach a different conclusion.

Many thanks for the warning. One of the more bizarre fakes can be found at

http://cgi.ebay.com/1827-Nikolaus-I-1825-1...1QQcmdZViewItem

Here the counterfeiter accidentally put the diacritical mark over the O in POLS rather than KROL (on the reverse) as should have been done. The seller is in Romania but this material probably originates in Belarus.

This romanian seller warns (in Romanian language) the eventually Romanian bidders about the very expensive postal fees (8 $!).For the most expensive postal fee inside Romania (express registered mail Prioripost) you may pay max. 3$. For this reason I think that this fake coin probably is not in Romania, the seller is only an intermediar...

It does not pay to post too quickly. The mistake is on the obverse!

Well, mariavoneva has sold well over US-$15,000 in rare Russian coins today. Most of the auctions have ended, but there are still some goodies going for US-$2,000 or more (ancient gold, mostly) ... don't miss your chance!! (ha, ha) :ninja:

I wonder if this account has been hacked? It is a bit strange that a seller of such coins would dump so many on the market at a time when most people with common sense (such as the eBay police) are sunning at the beach and enjoying a respite from eBay?

It will be interesting to follow the feedback on these auctions.

Hi everybody,

I received today the e-mail from the real owner of the coins sold by mariavoneva. He is shocked and want to consult a lawyer. Actually, we both have the address of this seller, as he bought some small coins from us some time ago.

I checked a few of the auctions by "mariavoneva" and found that several individuals had withdrawn their bids, some quite large; I suspect that the bidders had read the material posted here. Even though it appears that some will lose money, others have been saved from losing theirs. Had kisenish not posted this warning, the losses would have been higher.

Unfortunately, this is one post that I must agree that the content should NOT have been deleted. I was fortunately warned in advanced because of THIS post and made a wise decision thanks to kisenish.

I indeed agree with Julian that there were many major regular buyers out that I noticed that whom thought they were getting something there. If this really turned out to be a major scam, the amount of time to deal with such scam is no joke. I unfortunately fell into one such case in the past and it took a grand total of 2 months just to deal with it, which is not something to be proud of.

Numismatic wise, what that seller offered are not typical coins that one can find easily, and perhaps such collections are normally offered by a major auction house - seldom by a single individual.

Another 1796 copy, a 4 kopecks but from different dies from the one reported earlier in this thread:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Russian-Imperial-4-Kop...1QQcmdZViewItem

The seller says it is genuine but when one reads the conditions for return, it is practically impossible to do so.

These are, I think, made in Russia and it is said that they are on sale for a small sum. The letter "H" [= Novodel] is an instant give-away to the status of this piece.

For some uncertain reason the above eBay address (in the preceding message) does not come up when clicked on. The alternate way is to go to the Russian section of eBay (U.S.), put in the date of 1796 and click on search. The item is in the eBay Store.

I received a reply today from the other seller whose coin photos had been used by mariavoneva, and it appears that mariavoneva is no longer registered with eBay (NARU'ed). Also, this seller has informed me that they have filed charges against mariavoneva with the German police authorities.

Hopefully, they (eBay) will now do something right for a change and refund everyone's money who already paid, and inform those who haven't yet paid that they shouldn't do so.

But without kisenish's warning, who knows what path this might have taken??

BRAVO, kisenish!! :ninja:
