  1. PS: YOU want them all to move on...?!
  2. I have tried to find out if that Greek coin was meant for circulation, and I'm still not sure. I haven't ever seen one in "I've been in several pockets" condition that I can think of.
  3. Coins: 1c: 1908 5c: 1927 10c: 1946 25c: 1964 50c: 1962 $1: 1971 (no real luck here) Bills: $1: 1957 silver certificate $2: 1963 US note $5: 1969B FR note (had within the last year or two) Nothing of note (no pun intended) above the $5
  4. I can't vote against that shilling.
  5. Expo medal for me. I voted for it over myself in the last round.
  6. I get the same way going through the foreigns bin at my LCS -- "oo, neat!" is a subset of my collection. I've been taken with Polish coin design for years -- some of the most dramatic coin designs were minted during the People's Republic years. The Skłodowska-Curie centenary 10 złoty comes to mind, for example. That FAO piece is one I definitely have not seen before!
  7. Back when I lived in Toledo, I had the same experience with Canadian money in change, but not the same experience with storekeepers. Pennies through quarters circulated more or less freely, and it was kind of understood that you don't try to pass off too many at one time on either side of the transaction. Even the odd Canadian dollar (this was while we were still minting Ikes) showed up, and a little paper money once in a great while. Never saw anything larger than a Canadian $5. Oddly, twice I've gotten a Netherlands silver 10c piece -- one I found in the alley near our house, and one in a coin return slot, and both of them from the 1940s -- which is a *much* smaller coin than any American or Canadian piece.
  8. Agreed, it's a beautiful little piece of pottery. They can't be common in as pristine a condition as that, either.
  9. Found something in the local Coinstar, finally! Just my luck, it was this: So, are we ever doing the Ugly Coin Competition?
  10. The kana looks like it reads 'nyūrakkī' -- most likely a transliteration of 'new lucky' would be my guess since that particular kana is used for words borrowed from other languages--and assuming the ッ is actually a sokuon rather than a 'tsu'. It makes more sense (to me, who hasn't studied Japanese in 30 years and not past Japanese 101) reading it that way, anyway.
  11. Silly me, I forgot the other thing I got -- but quite by accident. One of the bills I got in change was a 1963B Granahan/Barr dollar. Well circulated, but solid. And now, retired. You don't often see paper money that old -- 45 years.
  12. Went up to the ol' LCS today -- the thing I love about that place is they don't treat the small-time collector (read: me) as a second-class numismatic citizen. No one objects when I hunker down by the foreigns bin for half an hour or so--usually I get offered a chair, actually. Pickings were thin, but satisfying: a 1969 10-groszy piece in stunning shape that fills a hole in my Polish set, and a 1949 UK shilling w/English reverse for my predecimals. I also picked up a 2010 UK 1p with the modern shield reverse, and a 1955 copper South African 3d just because I like it... and because I fear I am slowly falling headlong into collecting predecimal Commonwealth/Empire pieces. Pictures when I get around to them. Mainly I was there for nickels, and sealing a few holes in the 60s and 70s. Early issues are tough due to prices, but issues from the late 50s to the mid 60s are tough because strong strikes are hard to find, and even really nice MS pieces have a soft look to them. I'd been hoping to add nice business strikes of the 1965-7 issues, but ended up with only a 1965 because the others were unacceptably weak strikes (to my eye, anyway). I almost put everything back and broke the bank on a gorgeous 1939D-T2 with remarkable toning... but it was financially just not an option. That will be worth a little set-aside every week and I hope to add it by the end of this month. I did walk away with a primo 1940D, though. The rest were early 60s and 70s, and of course I picked up the 2013PD issues. Proofs aren't out yet, so the 13S will have to wait. The set is approaching 40% complete. Pictures when I get around to them -- I stopped at a nearby dollar store and bought a picture frame just for the glass, so I can have another whack at axial lighting. And then I will use the frame for my certificate from Coursera for completing their class on astrobiology.
  13. Oooo... about a third of the way? Thereabouts. By rough count, there were around 470 separate issues in 1963, counting mintmarks. And I think I have about 150-170 of them. Only really interested in the date, not the condition, so it's not a matter of finding choice pieces. Obviously, the silver is harder now than when I started, and I haven't really gotten definitive advice as to whether the Middle Eastern gold issues were circulating or not -- I'm not interested in bullion or NCLT, so I'm hoping the gold is one of those two for my poor wallet's sake. Granted, if the right piece at the right price comes along, I will cheerily chuck my principles out the window. Only within the last year have I started seriously using eBay to add to it -- up to now, I could get by in my LCS' foreigns bin, or at the Ohio State Coin Show in September. Personally, it's a collection I recommend -- you almost can't help but learn something you didn't know about geography, history, numismatics or politics while doing your research. Same goes for ksaurabh's collection of coins from countries that no longer exist. I quite like 'themed' collections -- I have another one for science issues that depict a person, object or theme in physics, astronomy, cosmology, chemistry, and/or mathematics (I haven't any personal interest in archaeology, biology, psychology, or medicine, so they go unrepresented). There's a little overlap here and there--my Polish collection contains pieces commemorating Kopernik and Skłodowska-Curie, which are equally appropriate to the science collection. Whether I let a coin 'belong' to more than one set, or whether I get separate copies for each one depends mainly on cost and opportunity than any predetermined course of action.
  14. Your local coin shop should have pages similar to the one you showed here -- those coins are probably real (the ones I could make out appeared to be, anyway), but they're going to be very low value, aluminium and brass and steel and all, and nowhere near as fun as going on the prowl for the coins yourself. I wouldn't slip raw coins into slots like that, though. I use pages that hold the 1.5x1.5 cardboard and mylar flips for both my birth year world set and for my Jefferson nickel project -- it lets me organize things to my liking, and gives me room to expand if I missed something. Most coin shops will have a 'foreigns' bin in my experience, which is a great place to get your hands dirty and see the world. My usual haunt has a standard 5 coins/$1 if you hand-pick them (which I always do), or a set price for a scoopful. They'll have pulled all the silver and the high-value coins, but what's left can still be nice, sometimes high-grade, always surprising. I've stocked a lot of my birth year set that way and only lately have had to start haunting eBay for specific issues.
