  1. I've got a 1830 10 kopecks Novodel, that has ugly crusty black spots. I've had it soaking in olive oil, for many months now, with no change in color either in coin or oil. Not sure what to do with it, but when I looked online, I did come across this statement on the NGC website: "NCS can remove contaminants such as PVC, soils, tarnish, carbon spots, verdigris and encrustation from the surface." If they can help I will gladly send it over. Question is can they really help? Has anyone tried NCS services for copper coins with spots or encrustation?
  2. The article was originally printed in one of the GIM compilations (I think the yellowish volume), but these days you can find it online. http://file.j100.ru/detail.php?ID=9113
  3. Does any one want a 10 kopeck 1834 CM?
  4. Sort of a hard coin to match.
  5. I don't get it. So having fewer options makes it better?
  6. I like the eagles with more than 3 rows of feathers in the tail. They seem more sophisticated!
  7. Don't know. I do know that I never check that subforum. It would be easier to just post things in a thread here, for those of us who are narrowly specialized. At least, I would check a thread here.
  8. Would anyone object starting a topic on coin trades? I know there is a subforum for that, but I do not go there. And I'm sure we all have some coins lying around that we no longer want/need.
  9. Do you mean that it looks more like the 1778/9 transitional type? I have bought coins from sellers in Russia a couple of times, they got to me with no problems, but they were much much smaller than this.
  10. BTW, pretty amazing bargains everyone! I need to be paying more attention.
  11. I guess they were falling out of circulation.
  12. Did anyone see this sale? http://www.ebay.com/itm/141174976310
  13. I like talers and I like wire coins, so I do admire efimoks. Just can't afford one with a pedigree, and won't risk buying one without. At any rate, I read somewhere (some forum post) that the date should stamped right above the rider's head like on Igors' coin. BKB's coin has the stamp to the right of the rider. Is that OK?
  14. Back in 2010 I opened this thread, you might like it: http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php/topic/29167-some-boring-coins/?hl=boring
  15. So we can say that this place didn't die, it just took a nap!
  16. The "Drunken" Eagle is only know to have been struck in 1731. As far as the branches go, I'm just curious, if someone told an engraver at Moscow mint to cut the Palm branches, what would they do? I mean it's not like they could go to the park and look at a palm tree? I assume that people have heard of palms, but would they have had a clear idea of what a palm branch looks like? P.S. There's a New Russian Sherlock Holmes series?! Is it any good? How does it compare to the old one?
  17. Maybe, but seems like in 1730-31 there is a lot of variation with respect to design elements. Maybe the dots are just there to keep everyone on the same page. They should have put some dots on the obverse too. Could have avoided an eagle that looks like this
  18. I hear that there's some new law that's meant to crack down on all this metal detecting. Perhaps they did pull up too many mines and other weapons. Would the Russian government really care about old coins?
  19. Am I correctly understanding that the "usual suspects" are dealers from Russia? I'm surprised that they would buy all those altered 5 kopecks, do they pay no attention to Russian forums.
  20. Point taken. I probably don't know them. Honestly, I only "know" in the sphere of Russian numismatics: you + other members of this forum + Alex Basok + Mark Teller.
  21. I've nether attended one of these, so just curious who the "usual suspects" are?
