  1. Nice notes, Baxuss and rbethea! Congrats getting some nice ones.
  2. The designs were done primarily by the printers. Each printer who secured a contract to print notes needed to have ample equipment and enough font designs and sizes to be able to print a variety that the average person would not be able to do. As far as i know, unless the General Assembly's of the colony had some input, the printer would be left to make his designs. Signatures were done by hand I believe. If I'm correct, the auto pen was invented about 1800.
  3. Nice looking note, Dave! Isn't is amazing how a particular note can be so elusive? Once I get one I've been tracking down for a while, I seem to see them everywhere after that. Congratulations on getting the note finally!
  4. Well finally made another colonial purchase. Connecticut this time. June 07, 1776 2 Shillings and 6 Pence. Fading signature is George Wyllys, serial is 11657 I like the back - the faces remind me of playing cards
  5. FR Number : F-238 KL # - 53 Normal notes should be about 80-100 dollars. This star note value is not listed in my catalogs. You should try looking for completed sales on eBay to see what they've been selling for - I'd say about 225 to 250.
  6. Nice notes, MMMM! Do you know if the paper on the Trinidad note different from the others they issue?
  7. Nice Spanish pesetas! Spanish notes all have a great look to them. It's a rare thing that I run across one I don't like.
  8. I am only translating by book (and of those I have only a couple references), but I think that the 5th symbol down in the main center section looks to be the Yuan/Dollar symbol. The symbol above it is definitely "Copper". I just got back from a very busy trip back home and am only now able to start trying to figure out my last two Chinese notes. I usually find more out than the seller knew - but not always.
  9. Baxuss - Nice set of notes! I would think that this series would be seen more often, but I haven't seen many of them at all. @MMMM - I buy these Chinese Vertical oriented notes - Private Bank Issues - more out of a curiosity than anything. Most of the ones I have are remainders, but I like them anyway. The few I have picked up that were issued are now going for some decent prices online...much more than I've paid for them. As for being real or counterfeit, I have had to take some chances, but the paper and printing all seem to pan out. I have only a couple of people in China that I feel comfortable in purchasing from, and even then I stay cheap. I fell into a couple that I thought might be counterfeit one time, but in consulting with an expert, they were confirmed to be variants of the printing system (different artists carving the same image in wood blocks as they wore out). Here's my latest one. After this I hope to get back to the U.S. Colonials - gotta do some shopping!
  10. Got this in on Friday - 1925 Private Bank from China - 4000 Tiao denomination.

Here's another of the Yugoslavian Tito on a 500 Sylis note from Guinea
  12. those have been some really nice notes you've added lately MMMM!
  13. Hello Pierre. Welcome to coinpeople! This is a Japanese note. It is called a Hansatsu note. They are quite fascinating notes. Your note is a 1 Silver Monme Issued by the Shibamura Han in the Yamamoto-Wahsu Province during the Enkyo (Edo) era, year 2 (Kinoto Ushi) - Western year 1745 You can read more about them here: http://www.banknoteden.com/Japan.html
  14. What? Man, these are too cool! Gonna have to try and get a few myself. And here I was trying to save up fornsomethung else. Good grief! Haha
  15. One of the neatest designs on a note i think. This sun tiger is depictedvon the Sherman Dor Madrasah in the Registan square in Samarkand. http://travelornament.com/samarkand Copied from the link above: The powerful lion-tiger is Amir Yalangtushbiy himself, swallowing his neighbors as sun radiates his glory; or rather the animal-sun shows the tenacity of pre-Islamic Zoroastrian solar symbolism. Legend claims the architect responsible died for his heresy, yet other 17th century madrassah similarly adorned. The choice of colors, blue, white, yellow and green reflects Bukhara influence.
  16. Nice note, MMMM - Perhaps it's an early version of the Red Bull energy drink logo? haha Per your question, the small vignette is of a bear. Ursa Minor depicted together with the constellation. The different denominations of this particular issue had different vignettes of them - likely for ease of identification an as a primitive counterfeiting technique.
  17. Well this is my latest colonial that the postman brought by today. Thought I'd have to wait until next week... I will have to wait about another month before I can start thinking about getting one of the next colonials on my list. North Carolina - The back is stamped I.ASHE but the I stands for J. It was John Ashe, who was the printer, and quite involved in the revolutionary cause early on.
  18. Well I'm almost halfway - waiting for one to arrive via mail. Then that's about it for the "cheap" ones. I'll have to save up and shop around a lot more for the others. They can get kind of pricey. Nice Iranian note! The back it very cool.
  19. Three shillings from New Jersey Colony.
  20. Great notes both of you! It's a treat to see such high quality rarities. Thank you both for sharing them.
  21. Nice to see you here again Mark! Great set of notes in this lot.
  22. I agree with the above and add the modern issues of China and Japan (Too bland - and they have so much historical reference and culture to draw from), Saudi Arabia (poor portrait and back design), Azerbaijan (too boring and Euro-like), Finland's last issue (The Euro is actually better!) There are surely others, but these top my charts.
  23. Everyone has some great notes lately! Keep 'em coming! Today I got this 1918 100 Hryven note. It's been hard for me to find one that was in decent condition... but it seems to have more of a green tint to it than the others I've seen. Might just be my eyes, but that's how I see it.
  24. Ahhh! It's a nice day when you can come home to banknotes waiting for you after a day's work. Colonial issue - Rhode Island 20 Dollars - 1780.
