  1. I've just bought this one been wanting it for ages 1953 crown mintage 124,000 0.500 silver uncurculated cost me £25 a real bargain. Its now possibly the lowest mintage silver coin in my collection, really pleased with it.
  2. In 2008 they made a £2 coin for the Olympic handover from Beijing to London.
  3. George VI silver coronation medal cost 3 shillings in 1937 that would be 15 pence today 87,000 minted by the royal mint.
  4. Thanks Constanius sometimes reading a forum can be an insperation when it comes to looking at your collection from a different point of view.
  5. I've sorted out a collection of coins and medals with nautical and maritime themes I've quite a few here. http://www.neocollect.com/coll/5934/
  6. Thanks for the site enjoyed looking at the medals, Napoleonic history is a favorite of mine.
  7. Nice medal, can anybody recommend a good book for medals I've priced up BHM and its a bit expensive for me.
  8. I've just found this site and it looks interesting they are producing tokens or coins as they call them as souvenirs. I've looked at the UK tokens and next time I'm going on holiday I'll be checking to see if there are any near where I'm going. http://www.nationaltokens.com/
  9. Another "Set" of Royal medal commemoratives I have is where the reverse has "Made in Britain" as part of the lettering the crest stays the same and the lettering or obverse is different. I have a 1935 silver jubilee of King George V and I have two for the coronation of King George VI in 1937 in this case the obverse is different. Does anyone have any Made in Britain medals for other events or the same events with different lettering or obverses? Does anyone know about Made in Britain is it a specific company? and what do you know about it? Full details and pictures in links below. http://www.neocollect.com/item/5160/ http://www.neocollect.com/item/5172/ http://www.neocollect.com/item/5792/
  10. I agree with you about going off in different directions and another thing I find I like about collecting medals and tokens as opposed to coins is they are not so well researched, you buy a medal and you can have quite a bit fun trying to find out a bit more about it some I google and find out more others there's no hits but with coins everything is pretty much documented so you come home with a coin put it in your collection and thats about it I certainly get more value for my money out of medals/tokens with time spent researching and cataloguing.
  11. I'm collecting medals commemorating the Royal Family it seems simple medals made for royal events but once you start collecting you begin to notice collections in your collection. I've two medals for King Edward VII which I think will illustrate what I mean. This obverse is used on two medals in my collection it is by E. Fuches and I believe it to be the official portrait for the coronation so they could be something which could grow as a collection any medal with this obverse. The reverse of this medal could be another collection in it's own right that of city and county crests. This one for Newcastle on Tyne and This one for Carlisle I also have a crest for Birmingham and Cardiff for Edward VII with different obverse and I have several other city crests for George V and George VI, I think it is interesting how one generic collection can begin to develope into several more specific collections. Do you divide your collections into sub-sections or do people not give it much thought?
  12. Nice medal in plastic case says limited edition. Any ideas on how limited?
  13. Produced by the Tower mint to commemorate the turbine generator centenary 1884-1984 45mm medal in box of issue same image both sides. Parsons is a firm in the north east of England and produced the first turbine powered boat the Turbinia. It is also where my father worked in the 1950-60's.
  14. I've just bought a pre-decimal Halfpenny token for J.T.Parrish Ltd. Newcastle on Tyne. It's a shop that used to be on Shields Road, Byker. I used to go there when I was a lad. I do not have many tokens but I quite like the idea of collecting local tokens with the address of the company on them makes it quite personal.
  15. Nice medal mine don't go back that far do you have any more of any period I'm trying to create a online community for royal family commemorative medals this is a slide show I've made for my coronation medals http://www.neocollect.com/slideshow/16/view/ and links are in my signature for the community hope you are interested as I think it would be great to have a place on the internet were these type of medals were catalogued into one place.
  16. I would not consider removing anything that was a part of the original mould of the medal ,it's only rings and ribbons attached via a hole in the medal itself. I would have included pictures but I'm not sure how to add them on this forum. Hello again Bagerap the other forum you mentioned was me thanks for taking an interest. Dave.
  17. What do you do about rings and ribbons on medals? Do you leave them on or remove them? To clarify I talking about the type of medal where to wear it someone has put a nail through to make a hole then put a ring through for a ribbon or safety pin through to be able to wear the medal. Medals with rings do not store very well. So do people remove them, leave them on? Would a medal with a ring or ribbon on be more collectable than a medal without? The purist in me says leave everything intact but this means they do not store nicely in albums, coin trays or coin envelopes. One thing I would do though is buy the same medal again if I saw it without a hole as I would consider this as an upgrade. Dave.
  18. Hello, I've created an online community for anyone who collects royal family commemorative and historic medals. I am not an expert on medals I enjoy collecting them and just think it would be a good idea to have them all in one place as a reference http://www.neocollect.com/c/Royalty/ Sign up with Neocolllect is free and then you can join the online communities. Hope you join me. Dave.
  19. A nice fathers did gift. The reverse is a large DW for Doctor Who. Dave.
  20. Hi, I've just made a £25 impulse buy! I bought a set of 7 1962 South Africa coins 50cent 20cent 10cent 5cent 2 1/2 cent 1cent and half cent coin in a red box inside the lid is a name and address A. Bickel, Coins and Medals, 151 Jeppe street Johannesburgh. I was wondering if anyone else has a boxed set like this is it a mint proof set? or a set that has been made up by this Bickel shop? The coins have some tarnish but they look uncirculated. Thanks
