Grading Imperial Chinese Coinage

I often find that Imperial Chinese coinage is overgraded, so I've decided to do this informative post on how to grade them. Below are are Kwangtung Province 20c coins struck in the reign of Kwang Hsu. Coins of this type were struck between 1890 and 1908, and are the most common Imperial Chinese silver coins today. The dragon design wears quite well, and it's not unusual to see a cleaned EF passed as UNC, or a G passed as fine. Below I've included UNC, AU, EF, VF, F, and VG coins.

Now of course grading is simply one's opinion, here's mine:

UNC: No wear, should have full lusture.

AU: Slight wear can be seen. Look at the face, and the scales below the flame (centre). Usually at least half of the lusture is present

EF: Some of the scales are starting to show signs of wear.

VF: About half the scales have been worn off. Face showing signs of wear.

F: As above, but forehead is now flat.

VG: Clouds at bottom and dragon's tail are merging into the fields.
