Ian
here's a few jetons issued for or by the Chambre de Commerce of Bayonne. The first is an early Louis XV jeton (undated but circa 1735). The reverse depicting the town's maritime trade The next is a later bust of Louis XV and although dated 1738 on the reverse, the jeton is more synonymous with the 1760's. The reverse depicts the town's coat of arms The next is a jeton struck in the early 1770's (again , undated)under Louise XVI. The design on the reverse has reverted to the maritime trade scene The fourth one is a mid 19th century octagonal style jeton in keeping with the fashion of that era. The obverse shows the towns coat of arms / reverse shows the maritime trade The next three were all issued in aluminium by the Chamre de Commerce in 1920 as `emergency money' and to facilitate trade in the Bayonne area. The token coinage maintained the `trade' image of past jetons but on the obverse this time.
constanius
Very nice collection. I like the idea of the 'emergency money' harking back to the earlier jetons. Pity they could not match the skill of the earlier engravers/designers though they do have a certain charm, and of course they were mainly intended for ulitarian purposes in a temporary situation. Art
Very nice collection. That waterfront image certainly spans a signficant amount of time.
