alexbq2
By all rights this should go into the fakes section. But I think that these "deals" deserve some extra attention. Deal #1: 1789 MM 5 Kopeeks to be had for only $300! http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335826004&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=110609798138&item=280599446895 Sounds pretty good!!! Apart from the fact that the date on this coin has been altered from 1788. The seller here arvoaarre has only 1 positive feedback (as a buyer for an unknown item) from someone called 5360bob. Now 5360bob has tons of positive feedback, and a few negatives. And interestingly enough he is also offering a great "deal"! A junk lot of Russian silver, with a great looking 1902 50 kopeeks mixed in for the good measure. And all that for only 80 Euro!!! http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335826004&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=110609798138&item=350420096739 Does anyone want a bet that this too good to be true 1902 50 kopeeks is made in China? I'll make another bet that arvoaarre and 5360bob are connected. In fact I will guess that arvoaarre is a proxy for 5360bob. P.S. Just noticed that I made a typo in the title. I'd appreciate if the admins could correct it.

bobh
Does anyone want a bet that this too good to be true 1902 50 kopeeks is made in China? It is definitely a fake ... the obverse with the pointed bust wasn't introduced until 1909, and the reverse is the reverse used in 1912 and later. Deal #1: 1789 MM 5 Kopeeks to be had for only $300! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280599446895 Sounds pretty good!!! Apart from the fact that the date on this coin has been altered from 1788. Not sure about the 5kop1789MM. The funny 9 is normal for 1789 MM. But of course it should not be too difficult to alter it from (178)8. Then strip the brown patina to get an overall equal color?? But maybe even the original dies had been altered from 1788 to 1789 - hence the strange 9 (??). The seller denied to send me the coin on approval for a close inspection. The grade (and color) are not too tempting anyway. But this rare coin comes (when it comes) always in poor shape. This one is still nicer than most. In every example I've seen (more than twenty) the '9' is much closer to the 8 than it is here.

Same here. And I have not seen any variations.
