I agree with you that the packaging for these sets is very attractive. However, I have my own theory of why this practice has practically dissappeared from Russian numismatics - THERE HAS BEEN NO SUCH A FAVOURABLE EVENT IN RUSSIA like Moscow Olympics since then ! In 1980, the USSR was put on the world stage. Every time the USSR were in that position, one can find very dramatic change in the routine. Just recall 1960s. When the era of space exploration started, the USSR issued a set of beautiful gold medals dedicated to the first people in space. I have not seen anything like that since then.

Lets wait and see what Sochi brings us. I am almost 100% sure that we will see a flood of various beautiful sets and boxes.

Now, it is official.

For those who can read Russian: http://www.lenta.ru/news/2010/12/02/coins/

They plan on minting 30,000,000 coins for Sochi Olympics. I am absolutely sure EVERYONE will find something.

Congradulations for Russia winning the bid for the 2018 world cup. :)

I've checked the Central Bank of Russia website and looked at their plan - looks like they got some heavy program going to happen next year: http://www.cbr.ru/bank-notes_coins/memorable_coins/plan.asp?Y=2011

For the first time, it seems Russia may mint gold coins up to 2 million which NEVER happened before ever since 1992. This would be very different and interesting as the so called bullion St George gold coin is only minted in terms of hundreds of thousands not millions.

It's something that I'm looking forward to in terms of modern Russian numismatics (post USSR era). I'm sure this time, the mints will produce not only fantastic designed coins but at the same time, in nice packaging and most importantly have good global network distributors instead of ebay sellers.

That said, Russia has already produced a fair number of world cup coins. I have most of them except for the 2002 Korea-Japan world cup. That coin actually bitterly reminds me of the time when I was in Moscow.
