The Sixpences Return

Many members on here might remember my days as a somewhat serious sixpence collector, well three years after parting with my last sixer, I've decided to return to collecting some of them once again.

Ignoring Charles II and William and Mary sixpences which are no longer within my budget, my next favourite type was the George II Young Head type. So I've decided to specialise in this area (for now) and to try to put together a decent date set.

So I've just bought two. To start with a date that eluded me the last time;

1731 - Roses and Plumes Although the photo is hazy on the reverse it looks like it might have adjustment marks, can't quite tell. Either way not the most common of dates.

And to finish off with a real good one, not because it's a decent grader but because I sold this very coin to this dealer three years ago, so yes at least one of my old sixers is coming home!

1728 - Roses and Plumes

Delighted to have that one back because it was one of my highest graders, along with a 1732 (which sadly the dealer has managed to sell on since 2006).

Very nice coins. I'm glad that you're getting your sixpence thing going again. I still have mine but haven't added anything in some years.

I love the Rose and Plumes design as well as the majority of 18th Century English coins. If I didn't collect what I do I would certainly chase after the 18thC niceties. Thanks for sharing Syl!

1728 plumes

That's a beaut for 25p! I am actually quite partial to William IV coinage too, but I don't have any at the moment.

Actually Scott if you like these early milled pieces, you want to look out for the following;

William III Shillings and Sixpences, particularly 1696 and 1697, there was millions of them minted and the lower grade ones can be got for reasonable prices (well more reasonable than anything else from that century and certainly in the same price range as William IV and Victorian Young Head silver).

Also worth keeping and eye out for is George II sixers from 1757 and 1758 and shillings from 1758, yet again many millions minted, there's a lot of them out there, sometimes low grade ones can be got at a bargin.

Last but definately not least George III 1787 sixpences, same as above.
