I'll Start with the Mar 09 Baltimore Whitman Show

I went to the Baltimore Whitman show Friday, March 27, 2009.

With the wantlist in hand I spent 3 hours looking for what I needed to fill some holes in my current areas of interest.

I ended up with only 2 coins.

A 1864 "L" IHC in PCGS MS-62.

On the advice of MFD (my favorite dealer) he's going to resubmit it to hopefully get an upgrade to MS-63.

Since he's a small cent specialist, I generally follow his advice in such matters.

Anyway, no image yet.

My other purchase was an 1825 Classic Head half cent.

Here's what it looks like:

Although the mottling looks bad in the image, you have to look at the real coin carefully to see it.

I find the camera often enhances color differences.

LOVE the Half Cent. Can't wait to see the IHC.

I had the show on my calendar but I wanted to save some money. The Baltimore shows are the only time of the year I really make additions to my collection. I guess I'll have to wait til July (or whenever the summer one is this year).

Glad you shared your pics!

Nice hunk of copper! How was the show in general? I have missed the last couple of shows, despite good intentions. Did I read that it was not open at all on Sunday this time?

I was there on Friday morning. There was a nice crowd, but not a crush.

IMO in terms of crowd size things were normal.

But were they buying?

Reports from many shows seem to indicate lots of looking but not as much buying except in the modern silver/gold arena.

The bullion dealers are doing okay, but the collectable coins dealers are hurting a bit.

I would have expected their prices to have come down a bit, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The Whitman shows (this Baltimore show was one) have been running Thurs thru Sat for a couple years now.

And Thurs is dealers-only until 2PM unless you want to pay a $100 entrance fee.

But that's about to change because of popular demand.

Starting with the June Whitman show (again in Baltimore) they will be open Sunday too.

I believe it will be optional for dealers to be present Sunday.

I don't know what will happen to Thurs.

I hope they don't make Fri the "dealers-only until 2PM" day.

I like Friday mornings; I'm retired so I can attend.

June for the next Baltimore Whitman show.

May's show will be in Atlanta, GA.

Since I have a type set, I've got examples of many different coin issues.

But not much before 1810.

If you want to see something in particular, just ask.

I really enjoy showing what I have.

Mostly nothing mind-blowing, but coins I'm proud of.

Yeah, I always like this show. Perfect size for my tastes. I think they did have Sundays until a few years ago. I went one time on a Sunday and half the place was cleared out :ninja:

Since I'm unemployed, I can attend on Fridays!

Also Kanga, where do you park (if you drive)? Last time I took the train and a cab there, all other times I parked in nearby garages (EXCEPT the time they were ALLLLLL full and I got a ticket after 3 hours of driving!!)

I park in one of the hotel parking garages that's close by.

Expensive ($22 this time) but convenient.

And I know about Sundays.

Almost an echo in the hall because so many dealers are gone.

It arrived!!!

This is the next to last coin I need for my type set.

One more SL Dime and I'll be done.

There are still holes in the set, but anything more is on the "wishful thinking" list.

A rather humble but important (to me) coin.

It's the final coin to complete my matched silver Roosevelt set.

Only a $20-25 coin, but it was the last needed.

Now all my business strikes are PCGS or NGC MS-66.

And all my proofs are PCGS or NGC MS-67.

My replacement 1881-S Morgan arrived yesterday.

The one I had in my collection was a reasonable grade (AU details) but had too much damage.

Imaging my collection has shown me some problems I wasn't aware of.

While I was at it I did an upgrade too.

Old Obverse

Old Reverse

And my second replacement coin arrived today.

My 1891-S Morgan had worse problems than my 1881-S.

And it's a slight upgrade.

The next identified coin that needs replacing will take a bit longer.

It's a 1892-CC and I have to find more $ for it.

Nice looks like a 1891-S VAM-7 Far Slanted Date 7 III2 6 C3a (Doubled Stars, Far Date) (191) I-2 R-3

Obverse III2 6 - Date set further right than normal. First 1 closer to the rim than the second 1.

link

Edit just noticed tough to confirm from the picture but the 1881 s appears to be a slanted date also.

I've never gotten into VAM identification.

My edition of the Van Allen/Mallis book is WAY out of date. It's the 1977 printing.

So I'm missing a lot of the added material.

I've got one slabbed Morgan with the VAM type on the label but I didn't buy it for that reason.

It was just a bonus.

I'll have to look into getting a new VAM guide.

I've got a full date/mm set of Morgans (minus the 1895).

The only other Morgans I should get are the 1878 7tf and 1878 7/8tf.

Fortunately they aren't high priced coins.

Been a while since I picked up anything new, but that's about to change.

Won a '43-D nickel in MS-67. Not in hand yet so no pic.

12 June I go to the Baltimore Whitman show and intend to get a fair number of items.

THAT'S when I'll post a bunch of pics.

Have you checked what the vam number for the morgan is? Looks like a Short Nock, Parallel Arrow Feather. Which should be in the VAM 100 to 199 range.

Mostly I'm trying to get used to my new camera.

I've got the latest Van Allen edition; just haven't taken much time yet to work with it.

I tried to figure out the VAM on one coin (one of the 1880's) but couldn't come to a definite comclusion.

I've got a full date/mm set of Morgans (okay, not the 1895) so I've got plenty to practice on.

On yours you can break it down further fairly easy. There are a few reverses, B2a Reverse / Normal, B2b Reverse / Open o in God, B2c Reverse / Broken r in trust, and B2d - B2h Reverses / Broken D in DOLLAR and Intact r in trust. That would narrow it down to 10 to 20 something ones to look at.

BTW since your trying out your camera, an open invitation to post any you have pictures to the morgan set in the virtual museum. I tried looking at yours but it probably would be easier with individual shots of the obverse and reverse. The composite pictures cuts a lot of detail out. I'm thinking yours is one of the B2a Reverse / Normal reverses. Can't tell if the "D" is broken or the "O" is open.

Went to the Baltimore Whitman show, June 12.

I arrived early enough to have to wait about 20 minutes before the doors were open to the public at 10AM.

Attendance was as expected for a Friday morning. I would call it a "light crowd"; good for moving around and bellying up to dealers' tables.

In general prices appeared to be down about 10% from what I expected to pay.

I mentioned that to MFD and he agreed. Looks like the dealers finally realized that the economy required this action.

My aim was to buy at greysheet plus 50% of the difference between greysheet and Coin Values.

And in all cases I beat that price.

My Plan A was almost a total whiff.

I did get the last coin I needed for my type set (1840 SL Dime, Stars/No Drapery).

I was extremely disappointed in the 1790-something half cents.

Every coin I looked at had the words "HALF/CENT" missing from the reverse. These were mostly 1795's.

According to the dealer this is the more normal situation. Because of the smaller planchet they were just not fully struck.

Apparently 1794 half cents are much better struck so he's going to be on the lookout for a well struck VF for me. At a slightly higher price.

My MFD had no IHCs for me.

He wasn't happy with any he had seen so far in the grade I wanted.

But he's resubmitted the 1864 "L" for me in hopes of nudging it up one point on the MS- scale.

So I had to resort to Plan B.

The objective was to upgrade affordable Morgans to VF or better.

I had a 5 that I wanted to do this to.

And I got them all.

Plus now that gives me some better date Morgans to sell/auction. Helps defray the cost.

Here's what I got (since there's 7 coins I'm posting links instead of actual images):

Didn't get this at the show, but it was an eBay win that arrived the same day.

The most important coin that I got. It completes my type set.

1878 7/8tf Morgan

1885-CC

1889-CC

1892-CC

1895-S

Sounds like you had a nice time at the show. It sort of snuck up on me and I didn't get around to attending - it's still on today, but as I may have mentioned earlier, when I have gone on Sunday, most dealer's have already left.

On the RI ...I have one of these also, although a lower rgade, yours is a beauty. It always struck me how low-relief that one is compared to others around that classic commemorative era.
