Q. abt. IHC prices

Can anyone please quote me graysheet prices for an 1877 Indian Cent in grades F-12 and VF-20?

I have the opportunity to buy one unslabbed from a friend of a friend. I already saw it in person 2 or 3 years ago, am convinced that it is genuine, and the person still has it and is willing to sell it to me. She has had it in her possession since she inherited all of her coins from her father years ago. Had no idea what it was until I told her! But I want to pay her a fair price for it, at least as much as she would get from an honest coin dealer.

Thanks! :ninja:

Well, I suppose I could go online and pay the few dollars to get it myself ... :ninja:

I don't have a grey sheet, but here are some recent auction prices on the coin ranging from VG-VF:

VF-30. Ex - Superior Galleries "The ANA 2001 National Money Show Auction", March 8-9, 2001, Lot 42, "Tiny planchet chip below date", sold for $460.00

VF-20 Obverse pitting. Ex - Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc.'s "Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale", August 6-7, 2000, Lot 5427, not plated, sold for $345.00

Fine-12. Ex - Bowers & Merena Galleries' "The Cabinet of Lucien M. LaRiviere, Part II", March 15-17, 2001, Lot 1204, sold for $552.00

Fine. Ex - Stack's "The University of Notre Dame Sale", March 20-21, 2001, Lot 179, not plated, sold for $632.50

Fine. Ex - Stack's "65th Anniversary Sale", October 17-19, 2000, Lot 139, not plated, sold for $563.50

PCGS VG-10. Ex - Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc.'s "Long Beach Signature Sale", May 31-June 2, 2001, Lot 7564, not illustrated, sold for $529.00

NGC VG-10 Brown. Ex - Bowers & Merena Galleries' "The Lake Geneva Sale", June 28-29, 2001, Lot 157, not illustrated, sold for $483.00

Judging by these prices the coin is probably worth between $400 to $700.

Ditto on greysheet. Haven't suscribed in years.

Thanks ... 2001 is a ways back, though. I remember that in 2004, VG-8 was something like $600 retail, and PCGS lists G-4 at $950 ... :ninja:

I think the coin would grade F-12, so I was looking at paying around $900. Do you really think these prices everybody has mentioned so far are accurate today?

Hard to say. Everyone I know had jobs in 2000 and 2001.

Jobs are scarce in 2009, but the rare coin market is booming because rich people are buying rare coins instead of stocks.

$900 seems very generous to me, but you may be right on the money. Buy it while you still have the chance.

(I wish I had bought a nice AU Newfoundland $2 gold piece when I had the chance. Prices lately have doubled or even tripled.)

This is the quote I just got from someone over on the RCC Usenet newsgroup:

from the January 2009 monthly summary:

1877 IHC VG bid 800 ask 875, F bid 1150 ask 1250, VF bid 1600 ask 1750

Looks like I was pretty close with $900! :ninja:
