bobh
Just wondering: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=310076984671 I'm looking around for this type, and wondering how much I should be prepared to spend.
squirrel
Are you looking for it in MS-xx, slabbed etc. or just a nice coin?
bobh
Are you looking for it in MS-xx, slabbed etc. or just a nice coin? I would actually prefer a nice one (high-end AU or MS) that isn't slabbed. But I don't mind if it is in a slab.
squirrel
Hopefully you wont need to spend as much as that $700 slab. I think I found my '96 (but only an xf) for $40, within the past year. I suppose it depends on who else is bidding, and how bad they want it. (isnt it always the case?) sturzny
Overgraded, I think. No way is this coin worth $700+. Hold out for a better deal.
bobh
Overgraded, I think. No way is this coin worth $700+. Hold out for a better deal. Thanks for the advice! Hard to say if it was overgraded or not considering the poor photos; but I think it was much too expensive, even if the grade was correct. Interesting that the seller pulled the auction prematurely ... I wonder why?
sandy3075
Someone may have offered him a more reasonable price and he pulled it off. I don't know if it was overgraded but the obverse definitely did not look attractive.
bobh
Well, I thought I had found one (UBS Auction 79, lot 5080) but I was the first underbidder! That one was a very nice one, much better IMHO than the slabbed one discussed earlier. Wonderful mint luster and deep fields (I viewed the lots in person, of course). Advertised as choice AU, I thought I might have a chance at it and bid very high (CHF 1,000). Alas, someone else apparently wanted it more badly than I did... At least I was able to pick up a nice USA 1819 large cent (lot 6274) for a very reasonable price. The catalog pictures do not do it justice; in person, I wasn't able to see anything of what looks like pitting in the catalog picture (obverse at 10 o'clock). I believe the catalog was still online yesterday ... today, I can only get the prices realized on their website: (UBS Numismatics). Does anyone still have a live link to their catalog? bobh
Hello, OlgaT, and welcome to the CoinPeople forum! Yes, the links still work as of today -- thank you very much! Lot #5080: Russia - Nicholas II, 1896 25 kopeek Lot #6274: USA - large cent, 1819 Clicking on the images opens a larger version of them. IMHO, both coins were undergraded. Too bad about the Russian 25 K! But I am looking forward to holding the large cent in my hands.
alexbq2
Thank you for the links! Very nice coins! Will they publish what the lots sold for? My favorites from this auction so far:

squirrel
http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04941h00.htm 1766 Siberian Polushka. Less than authentic, to my eye. Auctioneers must agree... its listed as "Z" (removed?) in prices realized.

Auctioneers must agree... its listed as "Z" (removed?) in prices realized. Not sure about the "Z" ... but you are probably correct. This 1766 specimen looks very similar to the 1764 fake published in the 1997 Brekke supplement (p. 105).

alexbq2
Thank you for the pdf! As for the polushka, the funny thing, is that I saw it yesterday, and my thoughts were – “This is real? Hmm, I guess that those fakes that I’ve seen aren’t as bad as I thought they were.” I just did not expect that they would have such low scrutiny for their material. I guess the lesson is – there are fakes everywhere these days!
bobh
Now that I have studied some of the other results of this auction, I don't feel so bad anymore. It is interesting that the following lots didn't sell, although the estimates appeared reasonable or even quite attractive: 5001-5003: all "wings down" roubles, 1830 (not FDC, but quite collectible ... good VF/XF, IMHO). At CHF 250 + approx. 22% juice, not a bad deal considering today's prices. In all three specimens there are lots of eagle wing feathers! 5021-22: 1844-KB roubles, EF condition. The estimate at CHF 700/750 was perhaps a bit too high, but considering some of the other PR I have seen (also in other auctions), definitely within the ball park. These are very nice coins, better than you can find on eBay! As to the rest, some lots went for more or less what the estimate was; with the gold and platinum, markup between PR and estimate was about 5x estimates. With the rest of these (links below), markup was about 10x or better (once again, here is the link to the UBS Auctions 77-79: prices realized): http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04897h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04903h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04905h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04907h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04921h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04972h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04973h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04974h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04986h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04993h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/04996h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05011h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05015h00.htm (attn.: alexbq2) http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05016h00.htm (attn.: alexbq2) http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05018h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05023h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05044h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05049h00.htm http://www.ubs.com/2/e/Auctions/ubs-79/05080h00.htm What can we learn from this auction? It appears that: - the minor denominations (vs. the roubles) are "in"; - condition is becoming more and more important (as it should, IMHO); - markup of silver and copper coins is becoming greater compared to gold and platinum (except for real rarities). Opinions? Cheers!
