thedeadpoint
Link to Heritage "Superbird" quarter lot "This variety appears in the Fourth Edition of the Cherrypickers' Guide, that indicates an S-shaped mark on the eagle's breast is from an "unknown cause." The name "Superbird," (a take-off on the comics character Superman) was given to the variety. As reported in a June 30, 2004 Heritage press release on a pair of Superbird quarters offered at the 2004 ANA, Ken Potter speculates that the "S" on the breast "... may have been the deliberate work of an engraver. " NGC has graded only about 100 so far. Another lot description: "A tiny, faint, partial S on the eagle's breast may constitute a hidden signature by an obscure mint worker. Engravers typically touched up proof quarter dies in the fifties to improve feather definition." I put my money on a joke by an engraver.
