RW Julian
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=330180124266 I do not have an 1800 KM polushka for comparison but it does not look good to me. The style of the date in particular seems wrong. RWJ

The style of the date in particular seems wrong. RWJ Well, Bob, it really wouldn't surprise me if you had one -- however, since most of the polushki of Paul I are listed in Brekke as very rare to extremely rare, it also doesn't surprise me that you don't have one! Brekke lists only one 1800-KM polushka, and it is a novodel (Brekke 16). The overall mushy appearance of this coin as well as the very suspicious edge pattern scream out "FAKE" to my humble sensibilities... Besides, the monogram doesn't look anything like any of the genuine polushki, so I think it was definitely not a Class 1 novodel; and if these were new dies (i.e. Class 2), the condition should be UNC or thereabouts. Just IMXO...

The style of the date in particular seems wrong. RWJ The overall appearance of lettering and ciphers is totally out of style and miserably poor. The mint used punches. As far as I see, only novodels are known? A novodel would have been even more accurate than a business strike. There are pictures of 1798KM and 1799KM (not 1800KM) in the following link. They may serve for comparison. Sigi http://www.numismat.ru/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi

squirrel
ebay item 160173889740 (still fighting with these links..) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=160173889740 This one just popped up for sale.... note the slab says "denga" VERY similar to the coin in this thread. dubovska is a knowledgeable dealer, in my experience. Dont remember seeing him listing fakes. I think maybe the term NOVODEL is being used generously here.

The reverse die is the same, the obverse probably so. The seller has been notified. RWJ

RW Julian
Looks like the seller took it seriously placing new comments in his listing. Thanks for the update. I also notified ICG that they had slabbed a fake. I had earlier overlooked the listing, but this coin was published as a fake in the Journal of the Russian Numismatic Society No. 74 (summer 2002). RWJ If the slabber(s) cannot even correctly identify the denomination (denga vs. polushka), then why would anyone trust in the slabbers' ability to authenticate such an item, let alone pay them for such a "service"?
