tabbs
Nice coin! And no, I won't ask what the Gorch Fock has to do with Togo. The German piece, by the way, will be issued on 7 August. Christian
Scottishmoney
Wasn't Togo once a German possession prior to 1918?
banivechi
Eh, I am sure that Gorch Fock wasn't involved in slaves trade (Togo isn't in Slaves Coast of Africa?)
tabbs
Let's see ... that Togo coin depicts the Gorch Fock (the "current" one, not any predecessor) and even mentions 1958, the year when the ship was built. So the only connection I can see is that the ship may once have sailed around there. But maybe it was simply issued as part of some "Famous Vessels" series? henare
i really like the winning design ... the others just seem way too busy. i do like how the eagle is styled to match the obverse. the u.s. eagle appears in a variety of different styles, and it's keeps the coins from being more boring than they already are. sometimes the eagle is an afterthought (see the eagle on a franklin half for an example of this).
