Another hacked eBay account

Only 11 hours left ... I suspect that the pictures are the only real thing about this auction (sigh):

37-1/2 gold roubles 1902 (100 Francs)

Reported to eBay as a suspected hijacked account. If others do the same, maybe these guys can be stopped.

Some people are very stupid, though, to bid on this one! ;) Total feedback of 9, yet all are from 2003 or earlier... :ninja:

Agreed and reported to eBay.

Thank you, Bob! :ninja:

I have been wondering if there were ever any studies done on these coins as to where they are today? We know that they were given to dignitaries as gifts by Nicholas II, and that only 200+ were struck (officially, that is). It seems likely to me that records were kept, but perhaps lost in the revolution (???). However, there must be auction records from times after that which would account for a great deal of these coins, if not all.

Many are presumably still in the possession of some royal families or descendants of famous refugees. Someone like Sergei V. Rachmaninoff, for example, could have had one and taken it out of Russia with him -- after all, he was a good friend of the Grand Duke, I believe, and considering his reputation as composer and pianist in 1902, it is quite possible that he might have received one from the Tsar.

Anyone else have more information about these coins along these lines?

I can add the following information to the abovementioned auction:

This coin was offered as a copy (not explicitely stated though :ninja: ) by the guy I know in person (comme_il_faut) appr. 1 year ago. He sold it for 2000-2500 Euro and sent to Israel. Then the buyer claimed that he did not receive the coin. Tracking revealed that the coin has been lost (stolen??) in Germany. The buyer tried to do charge-back but he was not successfull as the postage proof was provided.

To get a feeling of the story, check here:

http://feedback.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...userid=vojek.26

and look at the only negative feedback the guy has. This is actually a sad story, as shipping is always on buyer's risk, especially in this case, as no insured shipping possible to Israel.

Well, now the story becomes more and more interesting. Somebody took the picture from the auction where the lost coin / copy was sold. Now he sold this "coin", or, more precisely, its picture already 3 times - 08. Apr, 23. Apr., 02. May

I can't believe how impudent this guy can be ;) Or maybe he has 3 coins for sale within a month ;)

You got to admit that the buyers are equally fools here. For such a rare coin to appear on ebay and going that cheap and yet not have a sense that something is wrong, perhaps they can invest in quality numismatics auction catalogues for around 20 dollars each (or so). Oh wait, there isn't EVEN a need for that if they know where to look such as goldburg, sixbid etc. :ninja:
