gxseries
I find the idea of Maundy sets to pretty neat. I have seen some coins dating back to the early 1800s, but when exactly did Britain started to mint such coin set? I have seen some in original cases that are a good 100+ years old. Any idea when the first set was put in a box for such neat presentation? As well as, would anyone happen to know why? I used google and found this infomation: http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/maund.html http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/values/maund.html
Scottishmoney
Until coins were specifically minted for this purpose in 1662 during the reign of Charles II, they just used everyday coinage. Unfortunately the coins really only had a better finish on them, and after circulation were not distinguishable from the regular coins for circulation and only after 1820 when the Penny coin was only struck in bronze for circulation did the Maundy coins become one in their own. Lots of people refer to every coin from 1 pence to 4 pence as Maundy coins, but in fact most were regular coins.

Johnny 1989
The four pence coin did get another outing (non Maundy) under William IV (which I have an example of) & Victoria with a seated Britannia design, it had a very similar diamiter (sp) to the silver 3 pence. I'll try & upload an image of it if I get time this week
