What kind of coin, papadoc?
Copper could be the planchet material (Classic Head US Large Cents, for example) or poor storage ... too much sulpher in the environment, etc.
-
Fascinating information, ccq ... Thanks for posting that
-
Welcome to CoinPeople, Jerry ... Enjoy !!!
-
I love that Estonian piece
-
Okay, I was born about three days after dirt was invented, and when I was about 8 or 9 years of age, I received an Indian Head Cent (U.S.) from the 1880's in change at a local store
-
I agree ... besides, I can't tell the difference when they get past 67 or so
-
Yeah ... I'm a slow typist
-
I think it means "Deep Mirror Proof Like" as it applies to Morgan dollars.
-
Glad you had a good time
Looks like somebody's workin' on a type set
-
Thanks for the kind comments, folks
You know me ... I like anything "Victoria"
-
That's cool ... I was just looking around for something to make the flip inserts, and up pops this thread.
Thanks !!!

Well, I think it's pretty ...

Thanx for sharing. A beautiful collection of pieces (that I know nothing about). That first one..the York..WoW some *very* impressive detail on the architecture!
Thanks for the kind words
I only have a small collection of these, and most of them have architecture of some kind on them ... cathedral, church, bridge, buildings of some kind. I love the detail on those, too.

Hey Auld one!
That York one, i saw a few of those in York when i was there. A bit overpriced they were (i would think at any rate as they were in an antiques centre) but they had a heck of alot of lustre left on them. I recognised them immediately after i'd seen a picture of yours!
It's weird where things can turn up, i would never have noticed them if i hadn't have seen yours first. When i go coin browsing i tend to tune out (brain switches off) to all the coins i don't need so i stroll past them without batting an eyelid, saves me a heck of alot of money in the long run but i sure miss alot!
I do the same thing, Ætheling ... Then, if nobody has what I'm looking for, I circulate through again and look at practically everything. I'm afraid that's how I end up with coins I "really didn't want in the first place" ... but I enjoy them anyway

Well, my area of interest begins currently with George IV, so I guess 1821 or so ... BUT, I own a bunch of older coins I've acquired over the years. A couple of the ancients go back to the 400's BC. One British copper is from around 844 AD or so.

Ohmahgod, those are incredible
Those could turn me into a note collector.

I'm going with exonumia, mainly because, if I understand the definitions I've seen (including your example), they were not issued by any government. Sort of like British Conder Tokens which were "allowed" by government for use as circulating "small change", but not minted by said government. Notgeld would fall into that category, IMHO.

Fabulous set ... and a great story
And that price ... Wow!!!
Just a bit above my limit.
-
If memory serves, I think it was about $450 for a US $20 Saint.
My self-imposed "limit" is $500 ... but that's gonna change if I can find a NIIIIIICE Gothic Crown I believe the vast majority of my stuff falls into the "less than $50" category.

Now, THAT is bizarre
Very cool ... but strange
-
You have the coolest stuff, AF.
Why, thank you, ma'am

The medal is silver, measures about 55mm diameter and about 5mm thick ... it's heavy!!! The obverse is the Victoria "Young Head" by Wyon, surrounded by the legend VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIARUM REGINA MDCCCXXXVII. Under the bust is the word PATRONA. The reverse is a "sculpture" of a nude human torso and leg, strategically covered by what appears to be fabric. Both the "Young Head" and the torso sculpture include the artist's name,W WYON S on the sculpture, W.WYON R.A. on the bust. Reverse legend ROYAL ACADEMY INSTITVTED MDCCLXVIII . Under the sculpture is the word STVDY .
The edge is engraved (not during the mint process, apparently) TO MR. A. GATLEY, FOR THE BEST MODEL FROM THE LIFE. DECR. 10TH 1844. And it includes the original case.
If anyone has further information about this piece, I'd sure appreciate it
