  1. Something I bought for my research and collection. It's a Longcross penny of Aethelred II. The reverse legend is an odd one reading +SVMRLIDA MO EOFR. Making this Sumerlede on York but the reverse also has a pellet in one quarter and a cross in another. It appears to be of the same reverse dies as the example in the W. C. Wells collection featured in H. A. Parsons' article published in the 1917 BNJ.
  2. Thanks, Pat. I managed to acquire a couple more from a woman in Tennessee, of all places!
  3. I believe it to be BP and this would stand for Benedetto Pistrucci who was the designer of this particular reverse design. As for the P, that is indeed the mint mark and designates it as being of Perth mint, Australia.
  4. Welcome to the forum! Coin collecting can be a great investment if viewed as a long-term alternative investment but you have to do your homework and have a lot of patience. It is possible and there is a vast amount of enjoyment to be had in it. I hope you enjoy your stay here.
  5. Welcome to the forum! We very much look forward to seeing the coins and please give us a shout if we can be of any help.
  6. It is too small and out of focus for me to see. Do feel free to email me if you so wish or you can upload your picture to a site like TinyPic or Photobucket and then post them here.
  7. Is there a chance of having a clearer, sharper photo?
  8. Alec, I would be very cautious about following this information about Herod as I think it has very little to do with your coin. You do have a nice coin, though. Look after it!
  9. It certainly is an off-centre error but is of no great significance. Either way, it's worth more than 20 pence to someone!
  10. With regards to the off-centre coin, its value lies in the extent to which it is off-centre. As for photos, try uploading them to something like Photobucket and then posting them here.
  11. It's a lovely coin but without the hole would cost many hundreds! Still, this is one of the best portraits I've ever seen,
  12. Sorry, Karl. I know very little about slabbed grading but it is a stunning piece, nonetheless. You might have more luck here getting some opinions.
  13. A nice selection of coins added to the website. Be sure to have a look here.
  14. All transferred and problem-free, I hope. Apologies for the downtime.
  15. Sorry for any inconvenience. There have been major server issues and I hope to get it fixed as soon as possible.
  16. Thank you very much for the information, Pat. I'm intrigued as to what happened to the white building on the far right of this image, it looks like a warden's hut.
  17. Historic Coinage has a sale on many coins. Please be sure to browse through the many sections here. Kindest regards, Clive.
  18. Judging by eBay prices, not much at all. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1893-Austria-10-Heller-Strong-Fine-Condition-/140739727519?pt=UK_Coins_European_RL&hash=item20c4bdd09f#ht_913wt_1163
  19. Many thanks gentlemen, it's nice to have a token to go with the postcards. I managed to snag another postcard that arrived today:
  20. Welcome to the forum. This is a 10 Heller coin from Austria-Hungary.
  21. I went to school in Guildford for seven years and it's always been a special place to me. I buy the occasional postcard of my old school and some can be seen here: But, more recently, I managed to acquire a token of Guildford. The obverse features a woolsack in the centre with IOHN MARTIN around whereas the reverse features the castle with IN GILFORD 1652 around. This piece is ex. Norweb and cost me the princely sum of £6. Here's some more information about John Martin:
  22. It depends. With these coins it depends primarily on condition with the date or type rarity coming second. If the coins you have don't fall into these categories then it's often best to sell as a lot. Let us know roughly what you've got and maybe we can help.
