  1. If he was that humble as Poet Laureate, then he almost certainly was before that time. I'd say the probability of your suggestion that his submission to the paper was a poem is correct just increased by several orders of magnitude. Impressively researched!
  2. The picture might be grainy but if you send me the Siberian piece then I promise that all will be forgiven. Seriously, that is a lovely piece.
  3. Correct. The coin features the first and the last of the Romanov Tsars (although, of course, that was not known at the time of issue).
  4. The Romanov Tercentenary rouble is also the only Russian coin you can get with a portrait of Michael Romanov.
  5. If you are referring to the to the 1879 Chilean decimo, a closer look at the coin (or a higher resolution photo) will reveal that the "snake" is really a piece of a chain that the Condor has broken. This is probably a reference to breaking the chains that formerly bound Chile to Spain (a metaphor for liberation and independence through revolution).
  6. That is a magnificent find! Perhaps the Times would (given the relevance to the history of the paper) be willing to provide a copy of the editorial and the letter (if published). It might even make an interesting story for publication. One does not usually expect to have a letter to the editor returned and it seems an odd request.
  7. Hello Giuseppe and welcome to the forum.
  8. That is a very healthy attitude.
  9. Thank you BKB for getting this. The page still refuses to render for me and says <<Ошибка Возникла ошибка. Если вы не уверены, что правильно используете функцию, советуем вам обратиться к нашей системе помощи за дополнительной информацией. [#10342] Система не смогла найти форум, которому принадлежит тема.>> Perhaps there is a link on the page to an external site which I have blocked or depends upon a feature which I have disabled. Once again, thank you for taking the time and trouble to post the image here.
  10. It might be an overdate, but the final "8" looks repunched to me (8/8). However, die varieties are not something I know much about, so I might easily be wrong.
  11. But not now, it seems. Thank you for your reply.
  12. Hello BKB, I am having trouble with this link. When I click on it, I get a message saying "Система не смогла найти форум, которому принадлежит тема" which I think means that the forum does not exist. Are you certain that the link is/was correct? Thank you.
  13. Congratulations to RWJ - I cannot think of a more deserving individual. His contributions to numismatic knowledge through his research and publications are multifaceted and extensive. His contributions to the field of Russian numismatics are numerous and that is what he is best known for in this forum, yet he is even better known for his prolific contributions to US numismatics. The award and recognition are deserved many times over!
  14. Agreed. Not only well-written and interesting but quite informative as well. Thank you to Candidate for posting.
  15. Hello Andrei and welcome to Coinpeople. Thank you for posting this most interesting and helpful web app. I have bookmarked the page in my browser.
  16. I think it might well be an altered date. The "0" in the date looks quite different to me from the "0" seen in the Wolmar coin posted by alexbq2.
  17. Congratulations on your acquisition of these very pretty pieces.
  18. That's one huge bug. Good thing it's dead. Otherwise it might be deciding whether it should drag you off to the swamp, or eat you where you are.
  19. Agreed. Without this acceptance, then discussion and learning on the forum will grind to a halt. Ideas and opinions should be allowed to grow (or to naturally die) based on reason and supporting evidence.
  20. How many on this forum collect 1810 2 kopeks coins by crown size variety?
  21. These are truly beautiful. Are all of these in your collection, or are they just images of ones that you especially like?
