  1. I bought this 1657 Burgundy Estates jeton a few years ago but never quite got round to scanning it myself. These are the sellers photos of the time. I'm currently unpacking my collection having recently moved house. Once I get to this one i'll get better images together. In the interim this one will do :ninja:

Moving quickly backwards, here's an interesting pair of jetons dated 1656. One is silver, the other copper, issued for `Le premier Corps des Marchands de Paris' or `the Drapers Guild of Paris', the leading merchant guild of that era. I need to scan these again once I get them unpacked as the images are really pretty duff........ even by my standards.

Finally, here's an interesting brass hybrid jeton dated 1655. The obverse die was used for the Taverners (inn Keepers) Guild. The reverse die depicts the french cockerel chasing the flemish lion with the city of Arras in the distance

  2. Whoops......sloppy link in my post. Updated with the correct 1658 link and 1654 will go back into the dugout.

For some reason by roadrunner hosting account has now decided to be unresponsive, so image is not yet appearing. I am just a mess today.

Hey...no sweat. I'm a mess every day. I'll look forward to seeing the 1658 thaler whenever your image host decides it wants to play ball :ninja:

...and a couple of silver jetons from 1658.

This one was minted for one of the lesser known accounting divisions of the Kings Treasury dealing with the army.

This one was minted in 1658 for the Kings Counsel, but commemorates the taking of Montmedy in 1657.

  4. speeding along, here's a 1663 jeton and a couple of 1662 coins.

A `stock' jeton, but a pretty uncommon one. This is the only one of the type i've come across in silver.

  5. Ian --I'm not familiar with that 1664 bâtiments du roi jeton --the design appears to be a formal French garden, but which? Versailles wasn't started yet ...

    Hi Frank,

I believe that it is a plan view of L'Eglise Royale du Val-de-Grace, Paris. Originally built by Anne of Austria as thanks to god for the safe birth of her son, the future king Louis XIV. Exactly why it was chosen for the Bastimens du Roi in 1664 escapes me, other than it would be one of the `aedifices royale' under their jurisdiction and maintenance. there was however extensive building work conducted on it commencing 1664.

    cheers,

    Ian

(edit 5th october) Frank, i've looked at my CGB catalogues and the jeton is portrayed in `Jetons XIII'. Fortunately CGB still have a few of their catalogues available electronically. Here's a link to an example and another to commentary (no.33) indicating that the reverse is indeed a plan of Val de Grace.

  6. Here's a 1665 jeton that's a wee bit corroded, but good enough for this purpose. It was issued to mark the election of M'sieu Voysin to his second term of office as Lord Mayor (Provost) of Paris.

    952560.jpg

To help move it along, here's a 1664 jeton issued for the `Batiments du Roi' (the administration dealing with the Louis XIV's properties).

  7. Here's a silver jeton dated 1666 issued for the parish of Ste. Genevieive in Paris. I am completely in the dark as to the `M' counterstamp. I'm pretty certain that it signifies the jeton having been used as coinage in one of the french colonies (Montserat?), but happy for any input on this.

This one is a large silver ducaton (crown size) issued in 1666 for the city of Liege in modern day Belgium

  8. Ian, that second jeton is a real beauty. :ninja:

    1682 anyone?

I like it but it's not one of my favourites. This one however is!

    947351.jpg

A nice `city view' of Paris. A silver jeton dated 1682 and issued to mark the third term in office of the then Mayor of Paris.

I'll duck out now for the next few decades to give someone else a chance ;)

  9. Here's a couple of 1683 jetons

The first was issued for the Brittany Estates (local government of Brittany region of France). It is actually a 1683 /1 but the scan doesn't pick it up very well

    950869.jpg

The second is a 1683 copper jeton issued for the `batimens du Roi' (kings buildings)

    950870.jpg

  10. The first year of Jahangir's reign was 1658 (he ruled for 48 years) so his 31st year would be 1658+30 = 1698. ;)

    But who's complaining....

    By the way, nice coin.

Duh. :ninja: oooops! I must have transposed the numerals at some point and never noticed my error (ie 1689 instead of 1698). ;)

in the interim here's a silver jeton of Monsieur de Fourcy, Lord mayor of Paris issued for his second term in office 1687

    941849.jpg

  11. Who will take us into the next decade with a 1689?

Won't be me, I'm out until 1678. But I'll be watching... :ninja:

OK, lets get going. Here's a 1689 silver rupee of Muhammad Aurangazeb Alamgir, minted at Akbarnagar in year 31 of his reign

  12. Hi hiho -

I'm glad you mentioned photbucket because I already had my pictures in there and per your advice - I just resized them to 640x480.

And it looks like I've figured out how to get them in here.

So I guess at this point - I need to know for sure what they are, what they might be worth, and where I might go to sell them.

I appreciate any and all help,

    Sharon

They are all Swiss shooting medals and of different values.

I know it sounds twee, but they are worth whatever you can get someone to part with for them.

I don't have a concept of current market values in a pure collectors market but If you were to put them on ebay you might get anywhere between $60 - $120 for the silver ones and perhaps a bit less for the bronze / copper ones. Maybe more on a good day when the right collectors were around....., but maybe significantly less too when the collectors are sleeping. the last one I bought on ebay was only a matter of a few weeks ago, and I only paid 26.5 euro ($42).

If you were to approach dealers with your medals, you need to realise that they will make an offer that then enables them to make a reasonable profit from selling them on to their client collectors.

I have to declare that I have a vested interest though, as I would be interested in making you an offer outside of this forum (i'm not a dealer). Not knowing where on the planet you are based it is difficult to suggest appropriate dealers you might want to check out (?)

I have to say that your medal is dated 1891 and not the 1681 you had thought. An easy mistake to make though.

  13. Ian -

Thank you so much for your reply. I did try to post some of the pictures that I have taken of these medals.

But obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. I tried to post the pictures as attachments and when I try to do that - it says that even one picture is too large for the space available.

Is there a way to put the pictures in this post, rather than as an attachment?

I'm sorry that I'm not better at this.

    Sharon

    Hi Sharon,

Have a look at the main page under `site information and technical support' for appropriate guidance.

Probably the best way to do this is post your images to a webpage first. You can join omnicoin.com free and use it as a `host' for your coin / medal images. Once you have your images posted there you just need to `link' the images to your posts on coinpeople.com.

First things first though. Get your images onto a webpage or image hosting site like omnicoin. I'm sure the section of coinpeople i've mentioned above will enable you to find out how to 'link' the images from there, failing which we can talk you through it here. It's an easy process and anyone (once you know how) can do it in seconds.

  14. Hi - I'm new to this site and am not sure what I'm doing and I'm not sure I'm even in the right place.

Please feel free to let know if I've messed up.

I have five (5) of these Swiss Shooting Medals - or at least that's what I think they are from what I've seen on this site. My father collected many things over the years and my brother and I found these 5 medals in a box after he passed away. Due to the fact that my brother and I are not interested in collecting them, we are looking for advice on where we should go to sell them.

    The years of the medals I have are: 1681, 1887, 1890, 1894, and 1896.

    Can anyone helpe me?

Thank you in advance for your help!

first things first. I'm sure that some of the peop's here might be interested in your medals, dependent on what they actually are and the condition they are in. Why don't you get scans / images of them and post them so we can see for ourselves and take it from there? Happy to give advice as to the various means of disposing of them ranging from selling them direct to collectors, selling them via auction (ebay for example), or suggesting dealers you might want to try (dependent on where on the planet you are based).
