so whos got 1695 then?
-
We actually passed that point some time ago.
I think a strong case can be made that Peter II's French-style tresses (see my avatar coin) were not his natural hair.
Ditto for the Leopold (the Hogmouth) coins posted by worldcoinguy. That 1697 sixpence posted by ElleKitty is probably another.
Frank's 1696 jeton is for sure.
I agree completely. In fact, now that i think about it, Peter III's pony tail, and those Big hairdoos of Anna, Elizabeth, and Catherine II, must have all been falsies. Not sure on Catherine I. She seems a bit less vanity concerned than the others.
The Russians were a bit late to the Baroque Party, but they sure did catch up fast ( due to Peter I's influence )

What?? Don't tell me the did not date earlier coins. Man, your breaking my heart.
You might see something when 1655 rolls around....
-
Thus begins the transition from early Russian Milled coinage, back in time now to the famous "Men Wearing Wigs" period of world history"

Beautiful Poltina, IgorS!
1701 Grivna (10 Kopeks)

Id be happy to buy a 1702 Peter I copper coin, IF i could find one, anywhere, just to post and keep going!
BUT I CANT FIND ONE!
-
1702, anyone?
-
Overstruck on a polupoltinnik or something, which is then "fixed" by clipping the rest of the planchet
That sounds logical. I was flipping through Bitkin looking for the right text to fit the fragment, from an earlier coin, but i didnt think to check "Elisaveta"

This just sold on ebay. High bid (not me) was $360
Anyone have an idea of what the under-coin is?
It looks to have been a coin of larger diameter, and trimmed down.
-
ok, in the spirit of moving ahead... or is it backwards?
denga 1703

Altynik, 1704
-
1705 Grivna

I can contribute some "ugly" copper. Russian Polushka, 1706
Does anyone have something prettier?
-
WOW Wicked awesome Poltina too!!
-
This space reserved for a 1707 poltina to be added soon
WOW
ill add the 1707 Denga...
-
1708: 1 kopek, similar to Bobh's 1710, but with a proper "M" (darn theose illiterate Russian peasant die sinkers!)
-
no 1709, but ive got '08 on deck
-
Hey Bob, that M is upside down on that 1710 Kopek. Id ask for my money back!!!

For example, a common 1818-ПС СПБ rouble, discussed HERE, is listed in Bitkin in UNC at $350, but the coin cited ("MS-63") just sold on ebay for slightly over $3000.
This huge difference in prices says nothing about the value of the Bitkin catalog, but says a lot about how rapidly prices in the Russian coin market are changing.
Well said, Grivna
Bitkin will remain a valuable work for a long time.
Coin values from Petrov, Ilyin, etc are in use to this day by the major auction houses to denote relative rarity.
-
(pretty much in that order)
and definitely not legal. Would you also buy a coin if you knew it was stolen from another collector?
-
I recieved my copy of Bitkin today from Antikvarius. Im quite happy.
I sent payment via Western union online, which required a bit of set up for them to confirm my bank info (had to call them and answer some questions, i assume for security reasons) but the money wire was confirmed almost instantly after that.
Thank you Alex!
