  1. Is this good enough BKB? Does look like something was there originally.
  2. Not sure if this is an overdate: Just thought it looks like it.
  3. Good thing about this coin is that it's still very very affordable. Here's mine:
  4. Might want to give ebay a shot - prices are all over the place at the moment.
  5. I think the prices have already gone rocket high. Sure, some rarities will become more expensive in the long run - but can't see it happening with every single coin. I've already got most of the coins that I want and am quite happy with them.
  6. Oops - I think I didn't make myself clear. The main highlight is the collection of overstruck coins that I had in this link: http://www.gxseries.com/numis/rus_imperial/overstrike/rus_overstruck.htm Hope you enjoy it.
  7. Been hunting these overstruck coins for a while and these can be quite uncommon to really scarce. While overstruck coins may look ugly, some are really worth a fair amount. Here is a spoiler: http://www.gxseries.com/numis/rus_imperial/overstrike/rus_overstruck.htm
  8. I've been hunting for this Korean 1898 1 yang variety coin for years. In most catalog, they would describe it as narrow and wide variety in the character "yang". These are the examples: Wide variety: Narrow variety: The unfortunate story is, this coin has edge damage because it was an ex-jewellery. When I bought it from the seller, he was not aware of this damage. I don't have a problem with scratched or cleaned coins as long as the price is right. But edge damage? I'm not sure. I've just bought another coin to replace the damaged coin. I was almost about to send it off to the seller but decided to hold fire just in case it's worse. It's definitely beautiful with the exception of a scratch. However to my dismay - I never knew that there was a variety with this narrow variety type. If you look carefully at the character "2", the font size is definitely different. Honestly I'm at a loss of words. While I could have paid a bit too much for these coins compared to catalog price, on the other hand, if you look at what's available in the market, they aren't that common. What would you do???
  9. You might be right BKB. I remember doing something similar except I thought the details were a bit more worn down. What do you think about this? Might have to send this back if that is the case.
  10. Obtained a rather unusual 5 kopek dated 1977 and this weighs at a mere 2.62g whereas most 5 kopek struck in this era should be around the 5g mark. This weighs less than a 3 kopek coin! Any known examples of counterfeits? Will post photos soon.
  11. Interesting photo. Any chance of a reverse photo? Should be more obvious when the crown on the reverse.
  12. It looks ok to me one-kuna. Doesnt' look cleaned to me.
  13. I guess I normally don't go for circulated coins so I am not too much of a help. I collect a lot of foreign coins and I have a habit of buying perhaps a bit too much. However at the same time, I would have a good idea if the coins are good bargain or if I know some of the tougher coins could use an upgrade, I would buy them and sell of the lower grade coins. Sometimes, you could break-even even though you have upgraded some coins because they could be difficult to find and you bought a better coin at a good price. I would also buy coins in bulk because you never know what you can find. I found some of the toughest coins in unexpected coin lot. Persistance and spare cash do help when you are looking for tougher coins. Sometimes when you have sellers that are desperate to sell it and you are in luck, you need to have the money to snap it immediately. Not too much of a help but maybe something different?
  14. Found this one as an upgrade as my other coin was in a poor condition. This one is harder to find in a nice one like this: Good thing it didn't cost a fortune. I think most of the 1924 copper coins of this one year type (except 1 kopek) are in general found in poorer condition. Other copper coins from this year Looking to upgrade the 2 kopek coin but it shouldn't be as hard as the 5 kopek.
  15. It's not a die clash DJB. It's overstruck over Xinjiang 1929 10 cash like this one: Quite a hard coin to find to be honest.
  16. Now I'm shooting myself for not buying it when it was much cheaper... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Russia-USSR-1970-Set-/330784673520?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item4d044d8ef0
  17. I'm quite shocked that this happened but if you say that this is cleaned, 10 out of 10 will say so. But if I said I was conserving this coin by putting it in olive oil for about a week or so, would you believe me? This was what it was originally It's a rather scarce coin and thought if I could get rid of the verdigris, it would be better. But not when it looks cleaned. I didn't do anything special to the coin - just took it out from the container that had olive oil and washed it with water. But when I pat it dry - patina just stripped off. Came as a shock to me. It's not the first time I've conserved copper coins - I have some coins that have been in olive oil for more than 1 month and one up to almost a year and I have changed the oil regularly. This one took me as a big surprise - it shouldn't have happened but it CAN happen. I guess the moral of the story is to look at your coins a bit more often if you are conserving. It's a shame, this is one coin that I cannot upgrade easily or even downgrade to start out with.
  18. Can you see where the error is? A bit of Russian would help but you can compare it against a picture and see what the error is.
  19. Picked this coin up: This is a rather difficult coin to find in better condition. This coin was modelled after Sichuan 50 cash which you can see an exmaple here: While I haven't been throughly reading the history of different Chinese Provinces, it might be one of the coins struck during the chaotic warlord era. Quite fascinating. Wikipedia's page might give a good start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlord_era Got a feeling that it might have been one of the military governors that wanted to take his idea of establishing such coins from Sichuan to Hubei.
  20. I have been chasing all other coins in my collection and it turns out I was missing this particular coin for a while. What puzzled me is this - All silver coins struck in this era would still have the mintmaster mark either on the coin or on the edge. However the last era, Nicholas II 25 kopek coin doesn't show any mintmaster mark even though the smaller denomination do. This coin's edge is reeded. My question is - why??? I noticed that this coin was not struck very commonly either hence there is limited years of what you can collect. Would post photos when I get around.
  21. Holy !@#$%^ @ 2 stacks of 100 dollar Orchard notes. That's almost unheard of. Yes, take ccg's recommendation - it's going to be a fair amount of money since they are all in UNC condition. Wow.
  22. Hm. I decided to flip things around and see what happens if I propose this. Guaranteed to be extremely unpopular but who knows. 1. Introduce tax on issuing new dollar notes. The idea is to promote the usage of dollar coins. Since people still want to use dollar notes and it's more expensive to produce dollar notes in the long run, why not make money from it? Killing two birds with one stone. 2. Since pennies cost too much to make, weigh too much, and it's difficult to get people off the mentality of "penny pinchers", let's give it to them, at a cost. Some banks have already started to do it - if people try to cash in too much coins, there comes fees. The idea is to get people to use the coins and circulate them in the public, not just throwing it back to the bank for roll searching purposes.
  23. BKB... you know how to make people drool don't you? Would like to see a picture if it is possible. Only one I have seen was in Uzdenikov - there has to be another one out there.
  24. Basok definitely seems to have one. But the price... ouch. That said, he does have some Soviet coins that I have been wanting for quite a while. Also off-topic - some Russian coin prices seem to have fallen down for instance Peter I polushka coins and Paul I coins in nice XF condition - they seem to have become more affordable compared to the past couple of years. Most other coins have generally risen in prices.
