  1. Thanks tommyd, I was more curious about the black specks in the center. Its a type of toning I never really come across. Perhaps why I got it for a decent deal.
  2. 1941 Walking Liberty Half Dollar - Proof-66. what is that dark toning caused by?
  3. Nice additions! At first I thought "wow! A 1922-D! How rare!" and then "A 1914-S! He's got two of the biggest rarities there!" Then I realized.... It was fun while it lasted.
  4. Ditto. I like the perspective on the boats.
  5. Finally I get to add one... 1951 Washington-Carver Commem
  6. ehhh.. bollocks. i finally had two modern coins but I didnt realize they were THIS modern.. 55 and 57. just missed it.
  7. Of course there are slight design modifications in the almost-30-year's date difference. And of course they aren't from the same dies. But, based on my experience, you can see that the 78 was minted later in the production than the 2005: 1) the sharpness of the mintmark in the 2005 vs the less-sharp 1978 mintmark. 2) the concavity of the field near the rims on the riverse on the 1978 vs the levelness of the field on the 2005 3) the same phenomenom i seen immediately below the steps on the 1978. 4) the design also seems much crisper on the 2005. Now, i've seen in other threads on CP that field concavity near the rims is found on late-die-stage coins - that explains points 2) and 3). In fact, Matt gives a nice explanation of that here. Cool, eh?
  8. All are handsome! I really appreciate how you can see the differences between an early die state (2005-s) and a late die state (1978-S) right next to each other.
  9. Your signature says you got married on Saturday. Congrats! I hope it all went well and you are in a happy, healthy relationship that'll last your lifetimes! PS. I'm also glad to see CoinPeople is worth a few moments of your time on such a big big day.
  10. colonials for a quarter?! wow! I really really need to get myself into a coin store sometime soon.
  11. 1919 wheatie in Fine i'd say. Now, here's a conundrum I've come across before: you're collecting coins or note for a fundraiser or a charity. You see an old coin or error note in the bin. If you have that denomination in your own pocket, I think it's fine that you switch it out. BUT if you don't, and you reaaaaaallllly want that coin/note, do you leave it or not? Or here's what I did tonight. I donated $30+ in change and bills, probably one of the bigger donations of all the ones in the dorm. I came across this 1919 cent and pocketed it. I justified it because I had already donated a ton. BUT since I donated that money with the intent of every cent going to the cause, should I feel bad for pocketing one of those cents? If that's confusing, i'm sorry. I don't know.
  12. Yeah.. very dramatic note. I swear the child looks like its forcing the lamb to open its mouth and eat the flower. He's got a mischievous look in his eyes.
  13. that's one angry looking fish.. seriously, look at those eyes.
  14. Wow... how come that note hasn't made it into your "Pretty Ladies - France" thread? I see some lookers there... I saw that note and thought "man, I really got to get me one of those." Thanks for sharing the price. My dreams are crushed.
  15. lol... I agree with Mike... I figured it out that the old man is chuckling inside because he isn't just "Uncle" to the youngsters... he's a little more than that.
  16. Agree! Stunning and vivid colors - I can only imagine what they are like in hand.
  17. I laugh because they gave the handful of Westerners at my school our own private room during ramadan. We could bring anything we wanted from home or the stores for lunch. Nothing healthy of course! Our Muslim classmates would try to break in and eat. Twas fun... I went to Qatar Academy - the richest, newest private school there. All the best families sent their kids there. Out of the 16 people in 8th grade with me, one was second in line for the thrown, another was his younger brother from the Emir and the Queen. A few others were sons of the Emir and his sisters or secondary wives. Others in the class were of the Al-Thani family too or from other powerful families. Coming in as the only westerner in my year, and being the smartest and fastest in my year was not fun for the others who were used to being the best. I experienced racism from the victim's perspective for the first time in my life. I hail from Virginia, so I've seen it from the outside plenty of times. This was my first time as one of the players... Anywho, you said you visit Doha ever so often. I'm sure you'll eventually (if you haven't already) crossed paths with QA. Boy... I could talk for hours on my time there. But I apologize to everyone who reads this thread but didn't want to read this little convo between us But if you want an exotic, exciting, and cheap vacation... hit up the Gulf States before they get too expensive or popular!
  18. Why were you there then? What was the gulf region like back in the day?
  19. Those are all gorgeous. I love the fields on the reverse of the '84. And of course the Texas commem is fantastic.
  20. Congrats on the awesome acquisition!
  21. Until a few recent packages from you and another CPer, the only foreign notes I had were from Qatar! Although it helps to have lived there for a year and my mom goes back multiple times a year for business. Though she went about a month ago and forgot to bring back some nice crisp notes.... So Qatari Riyals and a US Large Size... the only two notes I have over you.
  22. Jeez, man... Azerbaijan.. do you have any countries left to collect?
  23. Yep, I saw her before. But I'd like to see what kind of damage I'll have to do to make my mark known.
